I'm having fun exploring this world of auctions
I'm having fun exploring this world of online auctions. I have a shopping list of items I'm looking for and set bid limits in advance. Note that sniping does not work on Rasmus options, bidding in the last minute just adds another minute to the clock. I've picked up from a number of the common locations: Laurel, Alexandria, Fredericksburg, and Harrisburg. My experience has been a little different across sites. I really haven't had any issues with any of the sites other than Harrisburg. Typically, the listings show online images of the item and photos of either the item itself or the box it's in. Occasionally those item photos are a bit misleading, in that they'll share a closely cropped photo of one side of the box, though in reality there's a gaping hole on the other side. I haven't had any big surprises with any of the items from those sites, however, leading to my 4-star review. My one experience with Harrisburg, though, was different, and I will not be participating in auctions from that site again. I got 10 items, and 4 of them had significant issues. One listing contained NO images of the actual item, which would have been helpful, as "missing 1 box" meant that half of the item was missing. Replacing it would cost the price of a new item or double the price of a Marketplace item. The second item was an electric power tool. The example image and the box were of different items, and the item itself smells strongly of gasoline. I'm hoping the gasoline isn't someplace that can cause a fire when I plug this thing in. The third item was for another electric appliance. The photo of the box looked pristine. It was described as "[Item/Model No.] packaging diagrams the [cool features]." That looks like it was written by AI, right? Well, to me it seems the description was deliberately misleading as the box DID NOT contain the item, just accessories and paperwork. It would have been just as easy to give an accurate description as it was the misleading one "box is lighter than it should be". I've never seen such a weird description on an item that didn't have the issue. The 4th item was also a power tool, though with the least problematic issue. The item was described as new out of box, but if that's true the item had been out of the box and probably in the sun for a VERY long time. In the end, I wasted more than 2/3 of the money I spent on the 10 items, and the 4 hours of driving just added insult to injury. So, my advice is, set limits for yourself in advance, put in your final bid ~2:15 before the closing time, and avoid the Harrisburg auction location. Have fun!
Response from Rasmus AuctionsOct 5, 2026
Christine, thank you for the detailed and balanced feedback. We appreciate you recognizing the positive experiences you've had at our Laurel, Alexandria, and Fredericksburg locations. We also appreciate the specifics regarding your Harrisburg experience. Some auctions on our platform are managed by independent sellers who are responsible for cataloging, photographing, describing, and releasing their merchandise. While auction merchandise is sold as-is, we still expect listings to provide buyers with useful and accurate information about what they are bidding on. The examples you provided regarding missing components, inconsistent photographs, and item descriptions are helpful, and we will be reviewing this feedback with the seller responsible for that location. Thank you for participating in our auctions and for taking the time to provide constructive feedback. We hope your future experiences with Rasmus continue to be positive.
