Falklands, South Georgia, Antarctica Jan 2019. Superb!
Nice to see some of my cruisemates posting and describing their takes on our wonderful trip! I’ll focus on just one aspect that contributed to such a successful trip from my standpoint. Before booking, I tried to make sure this trip would be very expedition-oriented, a get-out-there-and-maximize-wildlife-encounters kind of trip. I was assured that was the focus, but I still had lingering concerns the balance might tip toward tea and scones and fancy meals. While there was a plentiful tea time and lots of delicious fancy food, any fears about wildlife/nature not taking center stage were completely unfounded. Everything else was scheduled around making the absolute most of our time on shore. The wind and waves, which dictate what can and cannot be accomplished on a cruise like this, provided us with some challenges. To avoid the tumultuous conditions that would prevent landings and to seek out calm conditions, the routing had to revamped so that we were criss-crossing and backtracking all over the place. That meant the captain and crew had to work much harder, sometimes all night, and it meant the catering staff had to alter plans and suddenly have dinner ready 90 minutes early or throw in a 5 am continental breakfast. The expedition staff that surveyed the landing areas and got us safely to those spots also had to work overtime, as landing times changed and activities shifted to accommodate the wind and waves. It also meant more cost to Poseidon because we covered more miles than the stated itinerary as we went south to north to south again in South Georgia and enroute to Antarctica, all in a quest to maximize landings and avoid difficult seas. Without these modifications, that were readily undertaken and adapted to by the whole crew, the marvels we witnessed would have been greatly reduced. The crew and staff of the Sea Spirit, operated by Poseidon Expeditions, literally went the extra mile so we could have an outstanding trip. My expectations were greatly exceeded. I booked this cruise through Polar Cruises, which offered the same early booking discount as going through Poseidon direct. By booking 20 months out and choosing a triple-share, I was able to afford this extensive itinerary. I used a company suggested by Polar Cruses for air and that worked great. Usually I book my own air but was concerned about getting the right connections that required a cross-town bus in Buenos Aires.
