I got a dog with a registered pet key microchip. The original owner contacted pet key and notified them about the microchip transfer. The process went smoothly and the staff was courteous. My problem was I was told the microchip transfer would cost $49 and change. When I pressed the rep she said I could choose not to get the tag and card and the transfer would only cost $24 and change. Why would I need a tag? My dogs have tags, the microchip is for when they are found WITHOUT their tag. I was disappointed that a microchip for which had already been paid would cost money to basically update data in the computer system, especially since other microchip companies that offer the same services do not charge to transfer the microchip to a new owner. Additionally it felt sleazy that I was told it would cost basically $50 to transfer the microchip, and only got a better price when I pressed the representative. Overall while the people with whom I spoke were nice, I wouldn’t recommend this company. As someone who fosters and rescues dogs frequently, this is the first time I’ve encountered a charge for a simple update of owner information, and I’ve dealt with multiple microchip companies. The only reason I didn’t rate it 1 star is because the staff were nice.
