We adopted the neighborhood stray a few months ago, but she lost her collar with our contact info, so when someone found her and took her to the shelter, they scanned her, but was told that her microchip was never activated. The first time we took her to the vet, we found out she was spayed, declawed and chipped. I hadn't even thought about her microchip when she didn't come home, but when I did, I got out her vet records and sure enough, the info on her chip was there. Assuming it was registered to whomever had it put in, I called PetKey immediately to see if anyone had contacted them. That's when I found out that the microchip was never activated, so they couldn't say if anyone had scanned it looking for her human. I immediately registered her chip and was told an email blast would go out immediately to other pet owners that also have their furry kids chipped with PetKey in my local area in case anyone had seen her, as well as all the local vets, rescue groups and shelters. Within an hour, I got a phone call from a woman in my neighborhood who had found her and taken her to a local rescue shelter the day before. That was one helluva quick response. I've never been more relieved, impressed with how quickly this happened, nor have I been more grateful after speaking with a stranger. Friends of ours even got it two miles away and called to find out what happened within minutes of me getting the call from the woman that found her. I will most definitely pay attention should I ever get a similar email from PetKey and someone else is looking for their lost baby. If there were one small improvement I could recommend it would be to find a way to show that a microchip has been scanned even if the chip is not registered. The shelter that had our Smudge did scan it, so if that were listed with the chip number, PetKey's wonderful customer care rep, Alicia Ochoa, would have been able to tell me as soon as she checked the chip number and we'd have known right then that Smudge was safe. Smudge, it turns out, was out on the streets for about 6 years, so we knew she could take care of herself and knows the neighborhood better than we do. By that day, I was starting to lose hope, believing that the only reason she hadn't come home was that she couldn't for some reason, none of them good. The day I called PetKey was a Sunday and the shelter is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so had the woman who had taken Smudge to the shelter not contacted me, I probably wouldn't have known for another day or two that she was safe, when the shelter got your email. Other than that, I could not be more pleased with my entire experience. By the way, whatever you're paying Alicia isn't nearly enough. She was amazing! Oh, I almost forgot to mention as an interesting aside, it turns out that the rescue shelter the woman took Smudge to was the same rescue group that adopted her out as a kitten and they were able to tell us a lot of info about her that we'd have never known, including the month and year she was born, that she was the last adopted out of a litter of 5 and that when they had her, she was called Harmony. I was so grateful, I scooped up 50lbs of litter, cat treats and some food for them! Anyway, thanks again, PetKey!
