Paid for a year, denied on my first and only claim
On August 28, 2026 my dog Colt suffered a Grade IV laceration to his leg in a fight with my other dog. He needed emergency treatment: sedation, IV fluids, IV catheter, pain injections, critical nursing care, surgical repair, a bandage and an E-collar, then four straight days of follow-up visits and bandage changes. I paid just over $1,800 out of pocket at McCurdy Animal Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama. I filed my Emergency Protection claim within days, with both itemised invoices and a signed letter explaining exactly what happened. Pawp denied it in full under Part II, Exclusions, Section 9: injuries caused by another animal that resides in the member's household are not covered. Read that again if you have more than one dog. Two dogs living in the same house getting into a scrap is one of the most ordinary emergencies a multi-pet owner will ever face, and Pawp's Emergency Protection does not cover it. Now here is the part that made me file complaints rather than just cancel. Pawp publishes a help centre page called "What's not covered by Emergency Protection?" It lists an exclusion for injury caused by another animal where there is deliberate endangerment of your pet, including organised fighting. Any normal person reads that and thinks dogfighting rings. It does not mention household pets at all. But the real policy has two separate clauses: one for deliberate endangerment, and a completely separate one for animals living in your own home. The public page keeps the first and drops the second. The exclusion that cost me $1,800 is missing from the page Pawp points buyers to. The appeals process is worth understanding before you buy. Pawp offers review by an independent third-party veterinarian, but their own policy states that disagreements about policy exclusions, timing of coverage, and wording interpretation are not eligible for that review. So when your denial rests on an exclusion, and most denials do, the only people reviewing it are Pawp's own committee. There is no independent check. The policy also names Vermont as the sole venue and governing law for disputes, which puts a courtroom out of reach for most people. A few other clauses nobody mentions at signup: follow-up appointments after an emergency are excluded, so the bandage changes a surgical wound needs to heal are on you. One payout ends your coverage for the entire year even if it came to less than the annual maximum. There is a 14-day waiting period, and your claim paperwork has to be in within 14 days of the vet visit. I found Pawp through the free Walmart+ membership benefit, and the paid $19 a month Emergency Protection upgrade was presented during signup as a pre-checked box, with declining it labelled as leaving my pet unprotected. I am not claiming Pawp broke their contract. I am telling you what that contract actually excludes and what their own website does not tell you, because I paid every month believing I had a safety net for one emergency vet bill. If you have multiple pets in one home, price a real accident and illness policy from a licensed pet insurer and read the housemate aggression clause before you pay Pawp a cent.

Colt's injury sounds frightening, and four straight days of bandage changes after surgery is a lot for any dog (and any pet parent) to get through. We hope that leg has healed well and that things are calmer between the two of them now. You've laid out a detailed picture here, and it deserves a real look rather than a quick reply. Your point about how the household-animal exclusion appears on our help center page compared with the full policy wording has been passed to the team responsible for that content so it can be reviewed. Clear information before signup matters, especially for homes with more than one pet. On the claim itself: decisions are made against the terms of the membership agreement, and we know that answer lands hard when the bill came to over $1,800. If you have questions about the decision, the timing rules, or how the upgrade was presented during your Walmart+ signup, please email [email protected] with your claim details. Someone on our end will go through it with you, point by point. The same offer stands for anyone reading this who's weighing whether Emergency Protection fits their household. Our support team can walk through exactly what is and isn't included before you decide, so nothing comes as a surprise later. Thank you for taking the time to share what happened with Colt.
