I Used to Love Her
I Love My Gardyn, But the Cost and Customer Experience Are Hard to Ignore Let me start with the good, because I genuinely love my Gardyn. The vertical design is one of my favorite things about it, especially for vining plants. It gives me growing space without taking over my entire floor, and visually, I really enjoy having it in my home. I also like having Kelby and the technology that comes with the system. There are things Gardyn does very well, and that is why I have continued using and enjoying mine. Now for what I don’t love. Gardyn is aggressively expensive—not just the initial garden, but almost everything surrounding it. The membership is expensive. The plant food is expensive. HydroBoost is expensive. Replacement items are expensive, and there aren’t many affordable replacement options outside of Gardyn’s ecosystem. The yCubes are another issue for me. Paying $1.99 for an individual plant might have seemed cute at first, but after being in the hydroponic gardening world and owning five different gardens, I see things differently. With other systems, I can use my own seeds, buy compatible supplies elsewhere, or find inexpensive alternatives on Amazon. With Gardyn, you are much more tied into their ecosystem and their pricing. That becomes even more frustrating when things aren’t performing the way they should. Over the past few months, I’ve noticed that my yCubes haven’t been germinating as consistently as they used to. Most recently, I had approximately seven—possibly more—that did not germinate, and yes, I have pictures. On top of that, my sensors stopped working. To Gardyn’s credit, when I posted about my sensors, they immediately offered to replace them. I absolutely appreciate that and want to give credit where it’s due. However, nobody asked how many yCubes hadn’t germinated or addressed that portion of my concern. And this is where my issue with the company experience, rather than the garden itself, comes in. While responding to another person’s comment, I mentioned that I own five hydroponic gardens, named the different systems I own, and said I was considering purchasing two more systems that were not Gardyn. My comment was removed and flagged for profanity. There was no profanity in my comment. That bothered me more than anything else. If I violated an actual community rule, tell me what rule I violated. But customers should be able to discuss and compare hydroponic systems honestly. I own multiple brands because I enjoy hydroponic gardening and because different systems have different strengths. How are gardeners supposed to learn what grows best in which system if we can’t openly compare our experiences? Especially at this price point, customers should be able to talk about both the good and the bad. When you’re paying premium prices throughout an entire ecosystem, certain things simply shouldn’t be breaking down this soon, germination shouldn’t consistently be an issue, and customers shouldn’t feel like mentioning another brand means their contribution to a gardening conversation will disappear. I still love my Gardyn as a product. I want to make that very clear. But loving the product doesn’t mean I can’t criticize its pricing, recurring costs, replacement options, germination issues, or my experience with the company. Those are separate things. What’s important for people to know: Gardyn is a beautiful vertical growing system, and there are things about mine that I absolutely love. But it is also a significant investment with expensive ongoing costs. Before purchasing, I strongly suggest comparing different hydroponic systems—not just their upfront prices, but seed options, nutrients, replacement parts, subscriptions, and how much freedom you’ll have to purchase compatible supplies elsewhere. A good product and a good customer experience are two different things. At this price point, I expect both. Date of experience: September 28, 2026
