Disappointed
I am disappointed with MedMart. My review will be long but worth the read. Ordering was a breeze, and we received the wheelchair on the promised date. However, when I assembled the chair, I noticed that the locking mechanism for the leg support was broken. Instead of locking it when we pushed it to close, we had to lock it in place manually. I contacted MedMart on the next business day, the Monday after the Saturday delivery. I did not hear back from them promptly and grew concerned because I was aware of their 7-day return policy. When I reached out by phone, I was told I would be sent an email describing the additional information they needed to complete the parts request. When I received the email, I was directed to submit a video/images and the chair's serial number. I felt that it was a lot to ask, mainly because we received the chair damaged, but I obliged. The correspondence became more timely, and with the promise of a new leg being shipped, we felt comfortable removing the protective plastic on the wheelchair’s wheels so my mom could begin using the chair. Within minutes of the first use we realized the chair would not work because the front casters were smaller than the other wheelchair she uses which made it harder for her to manually wheel herself over the slight incline we at the transition from one floor surface to the other. After conferencing with the manufacturer about the chair, they suggested that we not changed the caster but we return the chair. Because MedMart’s policy clearly states that it is the customers responsibility to pay for return shipping I grew concerned about how much it would cost. And rightfully so. It cost $114 to return the chair. We paid it because keeping the chair and have my mom using extra energy because the caster was too small was not an option. My disappointment is not because of the product as much as it is because of the lack of consideration for customers who may need to return an item because it is not the right support for their diability and accessibility needs. To improve their customers’ experience in the future, I suggested that MedMart consider including a return label—especially when most of their consumers are already experiencing financial strain because living with a disability requires us to pay to modify a world that often does not consider our accessibility and mobility. We did not choose to return the chair as if it was a pair of shoes that didn't match our outfit or we changed our mind. We returned it because the wheel was not the suitable diameter to transition from one room to another. We would not have known this information beforehand because the diameter of the caster was not listed on their website. If we kept the chair with the smaller caster, it would be a daily exercise that would exhaust my mom’s energy and with her condition, lack of energy would cause safety issues and a fall risk when transferring. Additionally, when I shared my disappointment, they gave me what felt like an empty apology followed a reminder that their return policy is made clear to its customers. The is true but I would have thought twice about purchasing from MedMart if I had known that paying returns would end being almost as expensive as the wheelchair itself. But that is the thing no one plans on returning an item they purchase—especially one that is a disability need-based item. I took a hit financially for a return that was necessary. I am disappointed. I encourage MedMart to do better for their client base.
