The issue isn’t seat-based pricing
The issue isn’t seat-based pricing — it’s lack of disclosure. Hubstaff’s interface allows you to “Add a user” without clearly stating that this creates a paid recurring seat. Viewer-only users and temporary workers also triggered charges, with no confirmation screen or billing-change email. Charges continued while support tickets went unanswered. When support did respond only after being prompted and weeks later, they cited internal policy instead of addressing consent or transparency and most importantly consumer protection laws that apply to this type of situation. This could have been resolved easily with clear pricing warnings, but as it stands, the billing experience is not transparent at all.
Response from HubstaffApr 23, 2026
Hi Josh! Thank you for taking the time to share this. We understand your concern around transparency and billing. Please note that Hubstaff uses a per-seat pricing model, which means every member added to the organization occupies a paid seat and is included in the subscription cost. This applies to owners, managers and users, as each added member counts toward billing for the cycle. That said, you raise a valid point about clarity during this process. We understand how important it is for billing changes to be clearly communicated, especially when adding team members. Feedback like yours helps highlight where we can improve the experience and make pricing more visible within the product. Thanks again for your feedback and please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if there's anything else we can assist with.
