David Baumrucker- Sexist and unsafe therapist
We attended an initial couples session with provider David Baumrucker after I had four individual sessions with him and had concerns about professionalism, inappropriate statements, and communication. I made it clear during those initial sessions that my goals were to have a better marriage, improve communication, have more empathy, and help my wife feel safe. During the session, several statements and behaviors stood out as very unprofessional. He stated that tone of voice is the only thing that matters in communication and dismissed other factors as “fluff.” He repeatedly claimed that this is what “all the research points to now.” When we asked for clarification, he repeated the same statement and then said, for example, that he could say whatever he wanted in the session as long as his tone was correct. This statement felt like an abuse of power, was extremely inappropriate to say, and did not create a safe therapeutic setting. He also made comments suggesting that women’s voices do not create safety and used an example about men with higher-pitched voices being perceived as gay, which felt inappropriate and unrelated to the therapeutic setting. Multiple sexist comments were made that made it clear he does not respect women, not only in what he said but in the way he treated and spoke to my wife compared to me. My wife was interrupted multiple times, even after addressing it directly. This included when she was opening up, expressing a need for safety related to her past relationship experiences, and sometimes feeling the need to ask if I am okay. He interrupted her abruptly and told her she was “not allowed” to ask me questions in our marriage. When she asked for clarification, he repeated it with no reasoning as to why she could not do this and further stated that she had not “earned the right” to do so. We have been married for 10 years, and I encourage open communication in our marriage. I want my wife to feel comfortable asking me questions. It also felt as though he was encouraging me to consider divorce, despite me clearly stating that I am here to have a better marriage and want to be with my wife. As a husband, I did not feel this approach supported healthy communication or emotional safety in our relationship. I want my partner to feel heard, respected, and safe expressing herself, and that was not the experience in this session. We left feeling uncomfortable with the unprofessionalism and statements made and would not return. I would not recommend this provider based on our experience. This company needs to be making sure their therapist do not treat clients in this way.
