The app is easy enough to use, however, at the very end, GiveButter adds 15% to your donation. They tell you early on that, for example, on a $55 donation, there will be a $1.95 handling charge, and at the very last step, they tried to add $10.20 to our donation. No previous notice on a "tip". Very deceptive.

Hi John, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. We’re really sorry this wasn’t the experience you expected. Transparency is super important to us, especially when it comes to fees. Organizations and donors both have options when it comes to tips; orgs can choose to disable them or hide them from supporters, but many decide to include them because tips help keep our low-cost model running. We want to keep creating a platform that’s easy and affordable for everyone. If you were a donor and accidentally left a tip, you can always reach out, and we’d be happy to refund the tip while keeping your donation as is. We really appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to make things clearer and easier.

This company fraudulently added a commission to my donation amount. Who tips on a donation ???? Never knew this happened until I saw my statement. Company states they will refund the amount, NEVER HAPPENED. Steer away from this company. Find an honest fundraiser instead. If not, prepare yourselves to be hit with a 15% tip you never authorized.
Response from GivebutterJan 5, 2026
We’re so sorry this experience was frustrating, Jeannette. That’s absolutely not how we want our donors to feel. We do our best to make everything as transparent as possible, which is why tips are clearly shown during checkout and on your receipt. Organizations have full control over whether tips are enabled, and donors can always opt out. Many organizations choose to include tips because they help sustain our low-fee model and allow us to continue offering the platform at minimal cost. If a tip was added unintentionally, we’re absolutely happy to refund it right away. We couldn’t find any communication under your full name on our end, but if you reach out to us directly at [email protected], we’ll be happy to investigate further. Also, just a note, if a tip was refunded right away, you might not see a separate debit and credit on your statement. If refunded via reversal, the tip amount is simply deducted from your original donation. We’d appreciate it if you could check your statement and get back to us so we can make sure everything is resolved. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We really value your feedback!

This company is not what they claim, not only do they charge the donors money. They also charge a high percentage of fees during transactions. We did a payout of $470, and they literally charged a $68 fee. For months, they chased us to get us to make a campaign. Almost all my donors have said that they refuse to donate on Give Butter. Someone went to donate $200, and they were charging them an extra $35 to do so. They made it seem like funders were more apt to donate using this platform because it verifies that you are a legit 501c3. Well Ive passed out 18,000 flyers since the beginning of September trying to raise $50,000 and we barely even raised $1,000. Very disappointed using this company and I would not use it again after this holiday.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. We’re so sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations. We know how hard you worked to fundraise, and distributing 18,000 flyers is a significant effort! Regarding fees, Givebutter offers flexibility for organizations to decide how they handle platform and transaction costs. For donors, tipping is always optional; they can opt out at checkout, and we’re happy to refund tips if they were added by mistake. Our goal is always to keep things transparent and fair. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts, as feedback like yours helps us improve and better support fundraisers of all experience levels. If you’d like, our team is happy to chat about ways to make the platform work smoothly for your future campaigns.

The only question is if GB was part of the scam - let me explain. A tiny Montessori School in Tennessee raises $388,080 based on a 9 sentence appeal with zero marketing outside Givebutter. GB scammed me with two credit card charges (one charge over $10,000 and one charge over $6,000) including insane fees and donations to GB. Does anyone make donations around $17,000 and donate nearly $1000 to a venture backed online payments platform? I did not authorize these charges nor did GB inform me of the charges via a receipt. I only discovered this GB fraud when my telephone company rejected another charge due to an overdrawn account, overdrawn due to GB's fraud. GB tacitly admitted the fraud when it refunded the charges but did not disclose how it handled the other $371,000 in fraudulent proceeds. My contention to them was that a high volume scam like GB must make certain adjustments (like selective refunds) to deflect investigations of their ongoing crime spree. GB did not dispute my contention; GB ignored my contention. I submitted my case to the FBI like I told GB I would and I will let their investigation determine whether GB was in on it, like Bernie Madoff's feeder funds. Unfortunately, GB's refund to me caused me to have to tell the FBI that I lost no money, perhaps forestalling a thorough investigation. Therefore, I am telling my story here and I end where I began: the only question is if Givebutter was in on it. Thankyou for your attention to this matter!

6.1% fees. We should all be in the "business" of "giving".

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! We’re really sorry if the fees caused any confusion; that’s never what we want our donors to feel. Givebutter is an online fundraising platform that processes donations and other payments on behalf of nonprofits and charitable organizations. You can read more about us on givebutter.com. Our name appears on the receipt because we’re the payment platform and merchant, but all funds go directly to the organization. The organization decides whether donors are required to cover any fees or if it’s optional, so donors can also choose to opt out. Thank you again for your support! If there’s any confusion around the fees, please let us know, we’re just one chat or email away at [email protected], and we’re here 24/7 to help. 💛 Your feedback truly helps us make Givebutter even better for everyone.

Be careful! Givebutter deceptively adds on hefty donations for themselves when you process your charitable gift transactions. I paid a charity a gift of 1k and in the fine print my pressing the button to gift this amount came back on my receipt email as 1,180 gift. A 30 processing fee and 150 donation to givebutter. They call this a tip, and say it offsets the cost of providing free services to charities. After sending three emails, I was able to recoup this unwanted tip. So it’s a hassle if you are not extremely careful in processing your transaction. The company should not be automatically tacking on such large sums for themselves. I have notified the charity that used givebutter of my experience. It is fine for givebutter to ask for a tip, but the automatic tack on of 150 seems exorbitant.

They Didn't even allow me the chance to use the platform without deleting my account and blocking me from their website. No explanations, no feedback just complete removal. Honestly the only time i've ever experienced something like this in my life and will be telling every non-profit I work with to avoid using them in the future.
