My state return wasnt even made properly. Missing info from the filled in segment and the pdf was messed up.

they parsed my robinhood 1099 wrong. duplicated the fields and 2x my taxes. now i finally discovered it the next year and have to amend. when i complained they tried to sell me tax services to amend the return. their dev team is really really bad to ship a product without thoroughly testing robinhood, one of the biggest trading platforms or maybe they are incentivized to screw up your returns so that you pay them.

Unfortunately freetaxusa isn't free for state taxes or amendments but it's more affordable than other tax websites.

We also have several products and services available that are completely optional in order to meet the needs of our customers, including state returns and amendments. We charge a small, flat fee to prepare your state return or amendment, but you can go through the software to see if it works for you before paying. There is never any obligation to purchase the additional products and services that are available. Very easy to do my federal tax return for free, but they wanted $15.99 to file my state tax return. They give you the option to pay that by taking it out of your state tax refund. Great, what a wonderful idea, since I'm broke right now. Not so fast! They want another $24.99 for that convenience! Sorry, but that's ridiculous. Now I'm up to $41 in fees! No reason why you can't take the $15.99 out of my refund and be done with it. Too greedy.

Hi Tim! We are happy to hear you had an easy time filing the federal return. The option to have your fees withheld from your refund is optional and not required. The extra fee is not from us, but rather from the third-party banking partner we use to make that happen. Use it if you wish, but fees can always just be paid without the additional steps and cost.

TurboTax surprised me with $209 at the end. So I thought I'd try FreeTaxUSA, promises just 15. But the damn thing is buggy. Said I wasn't entering business expenses I clearly was, said I owe 1400 more than TurboTax said I owe. No help, I understand charging more for a live person but AI really should be available or at least help bubbles. Absolutely horrible. I'll pay the $209 after 3 hours of screwing around with FreeTaxUSA. Never again.

If you need more assistance, we offer customer support free of charge through secure messaging within your account and most customers will receive an answer within an hour or two. We also offer a live chat support option if you would like to upgrade to the Deluxe version of the software.

Awesome! Super easy to use - took me just 45 min. Same service as TurboTax for 1/10th the cost and MUCH less expensive than an accountant. If all you have is W2s, go with FreeTaxUSA.

I paid for their "Deluxe Support" because their site says it provides "unlimited amended returns". After completing my amended return, they charged me $17.97. Customer service refused to help, and customer service even left the chat (they don't have a phone number) when they realized they were lying about their products. This company is a scam and fraud and should be shut down. Update: after freetaxusa response, I will clarify by pointing to their own website (which truspilot won't allow me to post a link here). It clearly says free amended returns, more than once, while never specifying that it has to be in a particular year. I paid for free amended returns and they refused to provide that. And their customer service agent rudely ends chat to avoid handling the problem. So I now have to start everything over. But I'm just yelling at the wind because freetaxusa doesn't care about my effort. They could have issued a credit to make everything work, but they refused and I have to start over. Update 4/16/26 Freetaxusa issued a refund for the Deluxe Support. I did end up redoing everything by hand, which was not fun, but in the end they issued the refund and I appreciate that.

Hi Jeff, Deluxe support does include unlimited amendments for the year it was purchased. The Deluxe upgrade is available before you finalize and submit your returns. Once your returns have been submitted, we do offer Priority support, which includes live chat and quicker response times from our agents, but does not include unlimited amendments.
