I used FreeTaxUSA for the first time this year. When compared to its competitors, I found it very easy to navigate and very affordable. My tax return has been accepted and I hope the process remains as smooth as it has been. I definitely recommend it.

Hi Ernestor! We are glad that you found the process easy. Thank you for choosing us to help you with your taxes. We appreciate you!

Scam and won’t refund my money. I did my federal taxes based on zero income in 2023, the software then prompted me to pay for state taxes. Knowing I made 0 in 2023 I don’t understand why the system would prompt me to do my state taxes which apparently aren’t necessary if you’ve made ZERO income. Then charge me doing state taxes when my federal had $0 income. At the end of the process the software tells me they can’t e-file federal or state. To top it off customer service has not issued a refund for taking my money to do NOTHING. There was NOTHING to prepare because there was ZERO income. Complete scam. Response to FreeTax USA reply: your website does not properly distinguish that you have multiple websites. I went to the “FREE” site, there was no indication of a “commercial” site. Again you charged me for absolutely NOTHING - your site did no preparation because I had 0 income, the state taxes were supposed to be free, nor did your site e-file anything. You literally provided NO service. As I said before I did not use anything from your site because it was utterly useless. I shouldn’t be held accountable for your softwares “assumptions.” Shady business practices and with scammy software “logic” built off of “assumptions,” deceptive UX patterns built in, and a deceptive name of “Free” Tax USA.

Hi Jessica, I am sorry for your frustration. It sounds like you are using our commercial site. There is a small fee for the preparation of the state return on the commercial site that is the same no matter what income is being reported. We do have a Free File site, but you must create your account on that site through your state to receive a free state return. The Federal return is always free on either site. Although you did not have any income, the software assumes you would like to file a return since you are entering the information. If at any time you determine the return is not needed and you do not wish to file you can stop and no payment will be required. You are never required to pay the fee if you decide not to use the returns we prepared.

Longtime turbotax user here. Until yesterday. I jumped the turbotax ship at the eleventh hour (everything was input, I was all set to file despite being somewhat aghast at the steadily increasing service fee). My buddy sent me a text saying he finished filing. I asked what service he used. He said freetaxusa for 14.99. I immediately hopped on board and found it to be a friendly, seamless interface, all my numbers lined up with turbotax. Very glad I found freetaxusa. By the time I bailed on turbotax, the fee had reached nearly $180.

Hi Laura! Thanks for your post! We are happy to hear you have enjoyed our site and that we were able to save you some money! We hope to see you again next year!

They still charge you to file State Tax so it’s not free. Choose a new business name.

Hello! I am sorry if there was any confusion with our services. If you go to our website, it clearly says that federal returns are free and state returns are $14.99 in large font. We try to be very transparent about our services and pricing. Please contact [email protected] if you have any additional questions.

I have no problems with FreeTaxUSA EXCEPT I can't find a way to talk to someone about a message I keep getting. "Already Signed In We noticed you were already logged in to this account elsewhere, so we safely signed you out. Please sign back in to your account now." I am not already logged in elsewhere!! Who else is logged into my account when I am logged in? I'm really concerned about security issues and can't find a way to talk to someone unless I pay for Pro Support. HELP!

Hello Susan, I am sorry for the frustration you are experiencing. First off, please know that your account security is one of our top priorities. There are a few reasons why you may be experiencing this problem. If you try to sign into your account on a phone as well as your computer, you may be signed out on one device. Also, if you try to sign in on different tabs on your browser, you may be signed out on one tap. It could also be an issue with your browser or internet connection. Please make sure you are on a private Wi-Fi. Our software works best on Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. If you are still having a problem try clearing your cache on your browser. If you do not know how to do that, type "how do I clear my cache" in your browser search bar. Thanks for your review and I hope this resolves your issue.

Used this preparer for the 1st time, and now I still have not received my refund and cant get answers from anyone as to what the delay is. If I had used Turbotax like I normally do then I would not be in this situation. State asked for proof of different things in which I sent, and Federal just tells me its delayed with no reasoning sent in the mail. I filed on Jan 29th and it's now the middle of April, I should have had my return awhile ago and this tax service doesnt help with it whatsoever.

I'm so sorry for the frustration with not receiving your refund yet. I know how important it is. Unfortunately, the IRS doesn't provide us with any information after they accept the return. However, if your return was accepted, then there is confirmation that the IRS does have it. Please monitor the IRS website for updates at: https://www.irs.gov/refunds. If you have any further questions, please message us from the Support link in your account. Customer Support is standing by ready to help.

Saw on the state website they were free so I went to their website. NOT FREE. You have to have come from the state website or it’s $14.99 even though it says FREE on the state website

We are very sorry for the confusion. We must adhere to the IRS guidelines when it comes to the Free File service. One of them being you have to specifically come from the IRS or state tax websites to access the free file software. We are sorry for any frustration this has caused. Please reach out to our customer support team within your account if you have any other questions.

No where was it stated that at "free" tax USA you could only file federal for free and if you need to file your state you either have to pay them or choose a different service. Now that I've already filed my federal taxes with them I have to either file my taxes AGAIN with a different company OR pay them to allow me to file my state taxes through them. Predatory business practices. Should be illegal.

I am very sorry you were not aware of the cost of our state returns. We are very transparent about the cost on the homepage of our website. You can go to freetaxusa.com and view this information clearly published at the top of the page. I apologize for any frustration you have experienced. If you have other concerns, please reach out to our customer support in the Support Center in your account.
