Such a scam site they withheld no taxes on me nor did I make enough to even file taxes and they kept my royalties (after 2 years of being on there and paid) and closed my account because I had registered and entered my social wrongs and I had went in to fix it and they allowed it and I even had a full on conversation. With support about this a year before and they delete my account and keep my money-scammers had the nerve to say it was TAX FRAUD. like b**** where cause I ain’t filing taxes and all I made was not taxable so miss me with your racist b.s. avoid these scammers

I spent many hours setting up my children's books, only to find that there is no colour option for all my illustrations. I do hope that one day, they will have this option because after all my wasted time, it was not even mentioned in the process :-(

A sad end to Smashwords.
I have a large number of books published on Smashwords and always received monthly royalties. Not large amounts, but regular income. Since moving to D2D, I have no sales figures and no royalties. Mark Croker sold us out to a bunch of scammers. RIP Smashwords and D2D.

Unfortunately, the recent changes have significantly changed my opinion of the service.
I used Draft2Digital for several years and, until recently, had a very positive experience. They provided useful tools such as Books2Read, responsive support, on-time payments, and newsletters with genuinely useful information for indie writers.
Unfortunately, their new business model has changed my view.
The introduction of the $12 annual fee was, in my experience, communicated in a rather unclear and unexpected way. I did not find the transition particularly transparent, especially considering that Draft2Digital had previously been an attractive option for small independent authors precisely because there was no recurring annual cost simply to keep using the service.
More importantly, the change effectively forced me to stop offering some of my books through the platform. For a successful author, $12 per year might seem insignificant. But many small or occasional writers may not even earn $12 per year from the books they distribute through Draft2Digital. In those cases, authors would effectively be paying more to maintain their presence than their books generate.
That creates a very different value proposition from the service I originally joined.
It was good while it lasted, and I still appreciate the service Draft2Digital provided me over the years. I also understand that companies need sustainable business models. However, I think this particular change risks discouraging exactly the kind of small independent writers for whom services like Draft2Digital were especially useful.
Some longstanding areas could still be improved:
• There should be an option for trusted devices. Constant MFA can become annoying.
• There should be a better way to link duplicate editions of the same book across services. I brought one of my Apple Books here because Draft2Digital is one of Digital Narrator's official providers, but I cannot link it to the existing Draft2Digital version even though it is the same book.
• Authors should have more flexibility when updating physical books. KDP, Barnes & Noble, and Lulu provide more flexibility here. If a particular distributor requires a fee, authors should at least have the option to exclude that provider rather than being prevented from making the update more broadly.
Regarding KYC (Know Your Customer), my position has not changed. I understand why Draft2Digital performs identity verification, particularly given increasing digital fraud and the growth of generative AI. The process could certainly be more user-friendly, but I never personally had a terrible experience with it.
I also continue to believe that account termination could be handled better. When an account is closed, authors should still receive legitimate earnings already generated before termination. Policies that clearly separate account access from payment of previously earned revenue would help maintain trust even when the company and an author can no longer continue their relationship.
Overall, my experience with Draft2Digital was good for several years, but the new annual fee and the way the change was introduced have substantially changed my assessment. What was once a very accessible service for small independent writers is becoming considerably less attractive to authors whose books generate only modest revenue.

First, everything is fine, then they terminate your account and keep the royalties
At first, everything looked well and worked as it was supposed to. Problems were rare and mostly solveable. But probably because some scanbot they use found something, I got accused of plagiarism. Statements and documents I provided were considered insufficient evidence. Just when everything looked well, my account was suddenly terminated and they are keeping my outstanding royalties as it looks. Cases like this can also happen on other publishing services, but this is about the worst experience I ever had.

Tax Identity Solutions, Draft2Digital's chosen KYC provider, is an absolute disaster and has caused irreparable harm to our business. Their utter lack of professionalism, with requirements changing arbitrarily (the 10-year document validity is a prime example of their incompetence), their illogical processes, and their exorbitant cost for such terrible service are outrageous. Because of these clowns, we were unjustly delisted by Draft2Digital, causing significant financial losses and disrupting our entire operation. Draft2Digital, you are directly responsible for this by entrusting such a pathetic excuse for a KYC service with your users' livelihoods. We will actively share our horrific experience to warn others about Tax Identity Solutions and the consequences of using Draft2Digital.
