Not Feeling Valued As A 20 Year Customer
I have been a customer for nearly 20 years and have moved this service to three different homes within that time I have referred at least three to four customers to their company and the customer service is getting worse and worse. I just had the worst experience with the customer service rep that was argumentative had to be right, has no sympathy or empathy, that talked over me and set up a deferment plan where I can clearly couldn't understand what they were saying because they were mumbling, talking fast, and had an accent. I had to ask them to repeat themselves multiple times to slow down and when I disagreed and let them know that this was not helpful for my current situation they become more argumentative where I had to ask for a supervisor at least seven times! I feel that the payment plan, deferment plan, extension plan, and the balanced billing are not flexible if you are having hard times and are also attempting to set up a payment arrangement. They make it hard for you to receive payment plans, deferment plans, or an extension. The company has gone downhill to me and I may not refer anyone else to this company and may look for services with their competitors in the near future.

Please do not get fooled for the free electricity ...
They overcharge more per KW and delivery charges.
My bill for 1826KW was $ 417.63 for 14 days.
I switched back to Trieagle and pay 15.2 cents included Centerpoint delivery charges with only $4.95 base charge.

Stay away. There are better companies that don't bug you to death
Had Direct Energy for some years. Finally contract was almost up and I started getting harrassed by phone and by email from them. I told them if I got one more email from them I was going to block them. Within what felt like minutes, another email came in telling me to go to my account and turn on/off settings (NO - no need switched companies within days).
They are scammy and have many complaints on BBB. They called again on our phone and I blocked them. I wish PPL in PA would remove them from a list of suppliers. They got through, though, using a different number.
Date of experience has been about two months of harrassing me or more. Last time was about ten minutes ago by phone and they don't leave messages so what so important (I don't care).
I was switching suppliers and they've been the most spammy company we've seen since moving here. The distributor no longer has direct energy (I loathe the company).
9/14/26 Another call 11:35 am, no message left (so it's not important) and it's a different phone number), another call block and I don't think they can get through to my email address.
Edited 9/16/26 Direct Energy tried calling again with yet another #. I blocked them AGAIN. Was called yesterday this time I picked up the phone angrily and asked, "What's the issue?! (I get angry but I know it's tough being a rep so I chill as much as I can). The woman said there isn't one. I hung up and blocked them again.
I finally got hold of the distributor and they're doing both now (Direct Energy is still on the bill but the distributor said they were now the supplier until the new electric kicks in). I was told by the distributor it could take a couple months before I see the new supplier on the bill. I've never been through this with gas or electric in ten years. So, please stay away from D.E.

Liars and Thieves
Their door to door salesman made me an offer recently that was too good to be true. Turns out it wasnt and he lied. When I went to cancel and remain with my current provider they said no problem, their own agreement gives you 3 days to rescind. They never canceled. Now they say to wait multiple billing cycles for it to go through. Do NOT trust these people.

After almost a year with Direct Energy, I can honestly say this company kept me stressed out month after month. I DO NOT recommend them.
My electric bill was rarely, if ever, under $300, even though I am home alone most of the day and the other person in my household usually doesn’t get home until around 8 PM. I constantly tried to lower my usage. I unplugged things when they weren’t being used, opened the blinds instead of turning on lights, kept my thermostat steady based on the weather, and paid close attention to how much electricity I was using. Somehow, the bills stayed high or got even higher.
The most frustrating part was getting completely different information depending on who answered the phone.
I explained my lifestyle and usage to a supervisor, and he recommended putting me on a Free Nights plan. Based on what was explained to me, my bill should have been somewhere around $260 a month. Instead, my next bill was over $300.
I called back, and another representative told me the supervisor should NOT have put me on Free Nights and that Free Days would have been better for my lifestyle. So I trusted their advice AGAIN and changed plans.
This experience is as ongoing and stressful.
My bill then shot up to almost $500.
When I called back about that bill, I got yet another explanation about my kWh usage and charges. It became a constant cycle of calling Direct Energy, being told something different, changing something based on THEIR recommendations, and still ending up with an expensive bill.
I have recordings of four separate conversations because the information became so inconsistent that I felt I needed to document what I was being told.
What bothered me most was that every time I finally caught my account up, another unusually high bill seemed to follow. Even when I reduced my usage, I never felt like my bill reflected those efforts. Every time I changed plans because a Direct Energy representative or supervisor said another plan would save me money, the expected savings never seemed to materialize.
At some point, you start wondering what else you’re supposed to do when you’re unplugging things, watching your thermostat, limiting lights, monitoring your usage, AND following the company’s own advice, yet the bill keeps climbing.
Customer service was also extremely frustrating because one representative would contradict what another representative or supervisor had previously told me.
After nearly a year of dealing with this monthly headache, I finally switched electricity companies.
And THAT has been the biggest relief.
Direct Energy started as a headache and remained a headache until the day I left.
Based on my experience, I would NOT recommend Direct Energy. Before signing up, read the Electricity Facts Label carefully, understand exactly how your rate changes at different kWh levels, and don’t assume that a plan recommended by customer service will automatically lower your bill.
I wish I had switched sooner.

I needed just 3 days extension on my…
I needed just 3 days extension on my due date during the worst time of the year in the heat of the summer in Texas. Instead of allowing me to go on their website or the app and request the extension I went on to chat and waited for 30 minutes to get an answer and they wouldn't even offer an extension of 3 days. This company is horrible. They bought out the company I was with before, so I got forced into using them. I highly recommend going with a different company. I had them years ago and wasn't ever going back but my account was bought by them.

Direct Energy bait and swith promotion…
Direct Energy bait and swith promotion with Vivint. Promo stated that as long as I was a customer of Direct Energy, for an initial charge of $99 I would be provided with Smart home functiona equipment i.e smart Thorostat, security systems, etc at no cost for monthly monitoring. Install technician showed up and went over everything that was included and presented me with a bill in excess of $1000 and a montly charge of $56 for monitoring.
After discussions witih representatives from both companies over the course of two days they promotion was disavowed. I found a Direct Energy website and in black and white it proved my understanding of the promo offer at the beginning of this review. The job order number that should have been issued was incorrect leadin to the proposed cost I mentioned earlier.
Bottom line was neither company would honor the statements on the Direct Energy web site. All contact with Vivant ended and my next move is to cancel Direct Energy as my electric provider and find a company that stands by its published word.
