Couchsurfin used to be a terrific idea about sharing, welcoming and bein welcome. As (too) many such initiatives it went down the drain the day it was sold to become a for-profit organization. The last straw was for the "owners" to block, without any warning, all the "member's" profiles to racket them into "saving C$". A treacherous and fatal move towards the death of this beautiful dream. Many members are now deleting their profile and moving to a new welcoming hive : BeWelcome !

I'm so disappointed about the way they are treating their members, hijacking their accounts, putting their accounts behind a paywall (even for those that have already paid for verification or membership), deleting critical comments on their social media, blocking people, taking over a month to delete data etc...Shame on you!

Getting your account and all data deleted from CouchSurfing takes a very long time. I e-mailed CouchSurfing support on the 14th of May 2020 asking to delete my account. But it took until the 11th of June 2020 and several e-mails on my part before I got a confirmation from CouchSurfing support that my personal data was deleted. It a complete mystery to me why CouchSurfing has not chosen to make it possible that users can delete their own personal data instead having to go to a lengthy procedure via CouchSurfing support. It almost seems the management of CouchSurfing tries to hinder users to leave the site!

I used to love it, but they sold out. It's all about the money now.

Sad but true, CS decadence is happenng live right now. It's now mostly a site with authoritarian admins where you're censored if you don’t pay or if you say something they don't like.

I was an active member of Couchsurfing (both hosting and traveling) for over 12 years. It used to be wonderful. Over time (after they started to advertise the platform extensively) I started to receive more and more annoying copy-pasted requests so I stopped using it but kept my profile hoping for better times. Now suddenly, WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION Couchsurfing put a paywall. Which means you CAN NOT ACCESS NOR DELETE YOUR PROFILE unless you pay. I understand they need funds for hosting the platform, IT work and everything but THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT. Obviously they don't want people to go, because they want to keep their member numbers high to attract new people to pay. The trust is gone and sadly Couchsurfing will be dead soon.

Couch surfing était à la base une organisation non-lucrative, construite grace à la sueur des bénévoles, et aux donations. Un jour son président à décidé contre l'avis de tous d'en faire une entreprise lucrative, détournant dans le même geste les donnations reçues et le fruit du travail des bénévoles. Aujourd'hui ils imposent un abonnement payant pour utiliser le site... Il existe heureusement des alternatives associatives et désintéressées comme bewelcome.org
