DO NOT GET CIGNA IF YOU PLAN ON HAVING KIDS!
I am absolutely furious with Cigna’s so-called “maternity coverage.” They claim to cover maternity care, but the moment you suffer a miscarriage, you’re completely abandoned and stuck paying thousands of dollars out of pocket.
If you’re planning to get pregnant, do NOT trust this insurance. No one knows what will happen with pregnancy, and if the worst happens — a miscarriage — Cigna turns their back on you. They deny surgeries, ultrasounds, lab work, and even anesthesiology related to miscarriage care. It’s heartless, cruel, and completely unacceptable.
I’ve had TWO miscarriages and each time, they rejected nearly every claim, calling it “infertility-related” just to avoid paying. Their customer service reps give you conflicting answers, leaving you stressed, confused, and financially devastated during one of the hardest times of your life.
This company is a scam. They make you feel powerless, overwhelmed, and abandoned when you need support the most. Save yourself the pain and financial nightmare go with an insurance company that actually stands behind their coverage.

Cigna treats diabetic safety like a luxury — unless you're on insulin, you're disposable
Cigna actively endangers diabetics who aren’t on insulin by refusing to cover Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) — despite them being the gold standard of care.
If you’re managing diabetes with diet, exercise, or oral medication, they don’t care. No CGM coverage. No proactive support. Just finger sticks and a shrug. This isn’t cost-saving — it’s neglect.
Modern diabetes care requires CGMs to catch trends, prevent dangerous drops and spikes, and avoid long-term damage. Cigna’s policy forces patients to risk their health daily just to appease some outdated checkbox on a spreadsheet.
What’s worse? Their customer service gives you the runaround and acts like asking for a basic medical device is a wild demand. This isn’t innovation. It’s willful disregard.
We deserve better. CGMs aren’t a privilege. They’re survival.

Extremely Poor Customer Service
My wife requested an international claim form for an emergency service she required in France while on vacation in May, 2025. She had to request a denial from Medicare which she received in 7 business days. Cigna advised at the same time that she would receive a claim packet by email within 15 business days as well as a packet in the mail. It has now been over two months and the packet has not been received. The customer service people have made multiple errors in sending the packet to the correct email and no snail mail ever arrived. Despite several calls there has been no resolution. Today she was bounced around various customer service departments for 2 1/2 hours and finally spoke to a supervisor who promised she would receive an email in 4 days!! I don't know who will read this review but someone at a high level within the organization needs to get with it. Our next action will be to the highest level within the company to make a complaint if we do not receive the packet as promised in 4 days. Unbelievable that this extremely poor level of customer service can exist. Cigna management should be ashamed. Look at the reviews you are getting.

Consistent denial of valid claims
Consistent denial of valid claims. There’s little point in having insurance when the provider works this hard to avoid paying. In my case, identical claims were submitted weekly for over a year—about 70% were approved, while the remaining 30% were repeatedly denied without justification. I spent six months making follow-up calls, during which Cigna agents acknowledged no issue and promised resubmission, yet nothing was ever processed. The claims just vanished. It’s a deliberate cycle of delay, misdirection, and inaction that ensures they avoid payment through sheer dysfunction. This isn’t insurance—it’s obstruction.

Totally misleading coverage, failure to disclose the real situation
We were both covered by Cigna Dental PPO under my husband's employment and had COBRA coverage after he left the job until it expired in April of 2025. Our experience under the employer plan had been very good. We never paid for routine care (x-rays, cleanings and exams) and had good coverage for fillings and crowns. When his COBRA coverage was going to end and couldn't be transferred to a private policy, I went to the cigna.com site, read everything there and called the phone number listed on the site, which I (incorrectly) assumed was a Cigna number. I explored the various plan options with the agent I spoke with and signed up for a plan that I understood would be similar to what we had had before. NOT SO!
After paying 3 months of premiums ($65.35 per month), we had our first visit with our dentist. BEFORE rendering any services, our dentist called Cigna to verify our coverage and was told that, since our dentist was out-of-network, Cigna would pay 95% of the charges. We felt that was reasonable and went ahead and had our cleanings, X-rays and exams. That was on June 24.
On July 1 (today), I got the first "explanation of benefits" for my part of that visit. This coverage had been so misrepresented by the agent who sold it to me that in my opinion it constitutes fraud.
Our dentist charged a total of $320 for each of us. Of that amount, Cigna listed $98 as the "amount eligible for coverage by your plan" and paid 95% of THAT amount, leaving us to pay a balance of $226.90 for each of us. I called Cigna and their response was that this was correct and gave me the name and phone number of the person who sold me the policy.
It turns out that the person who sold me the policy was not a Cigna employee, but someone who sells Cigna insurance for Gallagher Alternative Health Solutions and is a dedicated agent for Cigna Dental coverage.
To make things worse, when I contacted Cigna today, I was informed that I could not cancel this month's premium and could only cancel the policy effective July 31, so I just had to pay yet another month's premium for insurance that, in my opinion, is totally worthless.
The person in Cigna's retention office offered to find me an in-network dentist and I refused because I would not trust any dentist who was so hungry for business that they would accept these pittances as compensation for their services. Before I bought the policy, I read the reviews on those specific (in-network) dentists and people reported having had bad experiences with them way too often for my comfort.
The bottom line is that I feel I was misled by Cigna and their authorized agent, and I wish there were some recourse for me, so that I could at least have this claim honored with a zero co-pay on our part, as we were told when we bought the policy, but no-one I spoke to offered to do anything for us about this, so my advice is to stay away completely from ANY of Cigna's policies. They aren't worth the price, either in dollars or the bad feelings that come with being misled and taken advantage of.

⭐ 1 Star Horrible Experience After 30+…
Horrible Experience After 30+ Years with Cigna
I've been a loyal Cigna policyholder since 1993, originally through my employer. After retiring, I chose to continue with Cigna independently because I believed they were a trusted name in healthcare. Unfortunately, that trust has completely eroded after this most recent experience. They now have more red tape than the federal government.
This wasn't my first bad experience with Cigna’s customer service. About two years ago, they sent me a letter saying my plan was being eliminated and I needed to select a new one. It was a nightmare trying to find a licensed agent in Hawaii. They promised to fix the issue—but never did.
Then in May, I received a notice that my premium would increase by over 50% starting in August. I made six calls on May 26, 27, and 28, trying to change my policy. After lengthy verification each time, I was told the agent wasn’t licensed in Hawaii and someone would call me in 24–48 hours. No one ever called.
The following week, I called three more times, only to go through the same cycle. The verification questions became downright absurd—asking whether I live in a house or condo, or whether my number is a mobile or landline. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, one rep hung up on me.
When I finally got a supervisor on the line, she transferred me to the dental department and promised a callback on Friday, June 6th. I did get a call—from Kimberly Bane, who said she was with Cigna and would resolve everything. We spent four hours on the phone, and nothing got done. She said everything would be taken care of on Monday. She didn’t call Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Absolutely nothing was fixed.
Kimberly insisted I cancel my existing policy and start a new one. I did, but the process was chaotic. They required my wife's verbal permission repeatedly, even for the most minor changes—it became a complete hassle.
Eventually, we canceled the plan altogether and requested a refund. We were told it would be processed within 10 days. It has now been 18 days, and still no refund.
We finally went with Hawaii Dental Service, and within five minutes, my wife was covered. All it took was a single call and a simple release. Cigna is disorganized, unprofessional, and not equipped to serve Hawaii residents.
After 30+ years, I’m done with them. Save your money and your sanity—go with Hawaii Dental Service or another local provider. They understand local needs and actually know how to deliver service.
This is my response to Cigna's Reply.
Hello, I will go ahead and email you—though I’m not sure what good that will do at this point. I’ve already sent a formal letter to CEO David Cordani and am awaiting his response.
I called your office again today. It’s now been 21 days, and I still haven’t received my refund. The representative couldn’t explain why it hasn’t been processed yet, but said it might take another 48 to 72 hours. That’s ridiculous.

Cigna customer service has now lied to…
Cigna customer service has now lied to me twice. The first time, they lied about fixing their error that cost me more than an entire pre-tax paycheck. I noticed they hadn’t given me credit for my incentive points that reduce my cost for health care through my employer. I contacted them more than 2 weeks before the deadline because I had the forethought to double check. The agent apologized, agreed that I had met the requirement and they had received the paperwork and promised it would be fixed within 7-10 business days. When it still wasn’t fixed, I contacted them again 2 days before the deadline and they said said no, they weren’t going to fix it. Yes, they had received the paperwork, but it was my responsibility to make sure that the doctors office had coded it correctly (which they knew when they processed the paperwork) but it didn’t matter anyway because I had been proactive about meeting the requirement and they wouldn’t have accepted the correction anyway because it was outside of the claim window. This time they revoked my prior authorization for medication earlier this year to add more hoops for me to jump through to get my medication. Problem is I was already jumping through that hoop. I had to go without medication while I reapplied. Then they denied my application for reasons that OBVIOUSLY untrue, so I had to wait more weeks on an appeal. Now they wouldn’t cover it and acknowledged that I had been meeting their additional requirements, but told me that when when my new prior authorization was approved, I was somehow supposed to know that I needed to create a new account with their same vendor using a different email address wait for new supplies to be mailed to me and use it them for a specified amount of time before they would cover my medication. When I pointed out how ludicrous that was, the agent doubled down. When the agent told me where to go to do this, the system didn't want me to because--you know--I was already doing it. So I tried to to do as instructed and the vendor contacted me immediately. When I explained they told me "absolutely not"and that they would escalate the issue. Cigna never contacted me to tell me they had rectified the situation. I only figured it out when I tried to pay myself out of desperation. My doctor said this is a common practice so that you'll give up out of frustration. One would hope that with peoples' lives on the line a little integrity could be found for their fellow humans rather than only caring for the bottom line.
