Miles of fine print; Waste of funds; Refusal to Refund (EVER...see fine print)
I signed up as a single parent in need of support for a year subscription seeing that the applicants had background checks. We just moved to town and was having surgery. I felt it was too expensive but we cannot put a price on the care of our children, right? That is if we get the care we need... 2 main issues: The website says the "CareCheck" includes Social Security number trace, National Sex Offender Public Website search, National Multi-Jurisdictional Criminal search, and a Federal and county criminal records search. So all criminal possibilities right? Nope, it does not include a Criminal Records Check or Driving Record Check (even if the applicant says they drive ). Both are the ones you really need for proper vetting (in my opinion) and Care.com seems to strongly suggest it as well. These checks are completed through a THIRD PARTY on their separate website with lots of repetitive information you just inputted into Care.com that does not carry over. Each check is $25/request or a set amount for unlimited amounts. Since I was going to vett quite a few applicants, I signed up for the expensive premier membership that included all of the driving and criminal checks AFTER I already had a subscription to Care.com because I realized I need it. I thought I could hurry through the applicants since I was having surgery and needed someone to help with the kids AND I paid for the checks. Here's the process: You request the background review which has to be APPROVED by the potential sitter and the request is not sent to the applicant instantaneously. They are notified 15 minutes later. IF the applicant decides to agree to the approval (this can be days), only then does the system run for the check and it can take a 1-3 days to run the report. I would have thought EVERY potential employee on there has had a background check and if I paid to see the check, I can see it. This is especially if I have a time sensitive situation. Also, I don't want to offer a job if the applicant is not fully criminally vetted (or spend the time chatting to lots of potentials only to realize they don't want to do a criminal background check). The reasoning given from Care.com's third party affiliate was stated that the check has personal information in it. Well, if the person is serious and signed up, they should be okay with the check. Maybe they need a place that marks if they AGREE to the deeper check. After requesting 4 checks, only one agreed in 6 months. The second issue is the lack of response or responsibility from applicants. I was a babysitter and nanny for 10 years. If you say yes, the employers is depending on you. I understand things come up. Out of the housekeeping and childcare jobs posted by me as well as me just looking and trying to message people, it was horrible. Few responded to any messages (I was paying around $20-25/hour). One applicant messaged me when I posted a job and said they were not available for a specific date but asked me to keep them in mind. Their availability schedule seemed to work perfect with my schedule. They had a masters degree in elementary education but decided to go corporate. She had flexible hours and could do early or late schedule appointments for my children. I thought I found the one! And then the next two appointments she canceled the day of and the day before. I lost time from my own work and had to pay for missed appointments. She apologized profusely and I get it, but if this is the best Care.com can do with only one response and two no shows in an urban area, I'd have to say NOT RELIABLE. I believe I read that Care.com says they are the largest caregiver database. A doctor for my children recommended care.com as a possibility to help transport my children. I told the doctor later of my experience of no response and cancelations. She told me she has heard the same from others. The Care.com website is MILES of fine print when you start digging and after you have purchased so it is too late. They have it posted that under no circumstances do you get any refund. I even tried asking. They assured me it would get better but 6 months later I can confirm it was a complete waste of $297.
