Not accessible for disabled folks or DV survivors
My domestic violence shelter paid for 3 months of therapy & I was excited to have therapy with a messaging option. I hear Better Help commercials & think how that would make therapy SO much more accessible to me as someone on disabled with brain injuries. I have been in ptsd treatment since 2007, am familiar with what to expect. However my therapist was not trauma informed and refused messaging after lying. I wish I had known she had problem with messaging when we were matched weeks ago, instead of waiting until today to take DV shelter payments. Live messaging is a badge on her profile. I wish we could addressed whatever issue she was having about messaging instead of behaving in a bullying way today during my paid session. A few hours beforehand, she suddenly requested video. I stood my ground and explained I need messaging due to disabilities, and that I needed to find tech with working cam & mic and build trust before being on screen. Im very broke right now. I triple checked if messaging was allowed? She said it was. I breathed a sigh of relief. Next she sent me a triggering worksheet right before session. I struggled to complete it. I let her know I was doing my absolute best. She received it, asked if I was ready to start our messaging session. I said yes. And then... She immediately pulled up a video room. I stated a 3rd time today that I cannot, and that needs to be listened to, begging my disability be respected. She would pretend to listen but refuse to answer and just demand video. I find this very triggering,it destroys my trust. We went back & forth with my needs & boundaries being ignored and not respected. I reached out to tech support to ask how messaging works? If this is even a feature of the app, how can my therapist & I access it? I then let her know I reached out to tech support. It felt like she was being manipulative and I wanted her to know I had eyes on the situation. As I guessed, she immediately agreed to at least talk through non-session messages. I caught her. I hoped we could have a professional conversation now but she seemed unwilling. She remained frustrated with me during our first & only session. She didnt like my sheet & sent shotgun of questions that would give anyone with ptsd some severe flashbacks, shaking, and nausea. I have been in ptsd therapy since 2007 and find her approach to be both unusual and unkind. I was requesting to get to know her better before we dove into trauma, and asking how long our sessions were. She refused to answer any of my questions or concerns. She was then frustrated I took too long to type & pushed me to respond to her tons of questions after just four minutes. I was already answering her previous questions. I started to cry because she was SO impatient with me. She refused to slow down when i asked or answer any my questions. She kept the video session link up the entire time, and asked me multiple times in a 15 min span to do video. I spent the entirety of our session defending basic boundaries of that I genuinely do need messaging in order to access therapy. Individuals with brain & speech issues do actually need this. I need a therapist who can meet me where I’m at. She ignored me. She said my trauma was too complex & made an ultimatum of all video therapy or nothing. I find this very ableist. This is not how therapy should be. I kept advocating for my needs. Live messaging is a feature on her profile but not she refuses. She immediately sent instructions for me to leave, said she cant treat my "psychosocial issues" & said find a new therapist not even 30 min in. My 2nd therapist refused to schedule me for even a single session. Despite my domestic violence shelter paying for sessions,he refused to support me on my move to escape abusers. He would not answer my questions to explain why but said others were also stuck without therapy when moving & was reaching out to social worker board about me. This sucked to read. After I reached out for assistance his tone changed. He messaged while on vacation asking if I could schedule immediately. I said I would be happy to, if he could just confirm he could support me while I was moving. He AGAIN declined. I regret being open with him. I requested he spend vacation time thinking it over, I do not understand why mobile telehealth is gatekept like this, I'm hurting. I set boundaries & advocated for my needs. On Christmas eve when he knew I was alone w/ a DV shelter, he said find a new therapist. *Great* way to put someone in crisis! Its wild that I cannot access care due to horrorific discrimination. I never want anyone to go through this. I'm queer & indigenous & just trying to get on my feet. Felt like these therapists were pushing me away for BS reasons. Despite commercials stating better help has messaging & is perfect for on the go, in practice it's apparently not true.

We understand how important it is to have your sessions in your desired fashion, Milo. If this wasn't the case with your first therapist, we want to do whatever we can to ensure your experience with us, is as effective as possible but also makes you feel comfortable. While state licensing regulations may be preventing your second therapist from working with you, during your move, we are always here to help you find another match who can support you in these tough times. I am going to request more information, via TrustPilot, so we can work together and find the right match for your needs and location. Looking forward to hearing from you and working with you soon!
