I know many people have a positive experience. They get matched with a great therapist and it is easy to get therapy that is adaptable to your schedule. However, if you ever have an issue their customer service is atrocious. You cannot get a response in a timely way, refunds are never guaranteed and there isn’t even a phone number to contact them. Everything is done through email which seems so sketchy. And things go wrong - sometimes you want to cancel and get a refund, or they overcharged you. What then? There is no one to help you. For me the risk isn’t worth it.

Ignored ... FIRST SESSION ...
This is absolutely unacceptable for the amount of money I've payed. I've been charged for 4 weeks. First week I couldn't get a single therapist to respond. 2nd week I got a video chat appointment. AND WAS IGNORED, NO CALL, NO SHOW ,NO RESPONSE . WAITED OVER AN HR! How is that acceptable at all? This how you treat your customers looking for help? I'm glad mine was minor emotional issues , I cant imagine someone looking for serious help who might get even worse with after an experience like this...

Horrible service
My counsellor I got matched with shouldn’t even be called a counsellor. I had 1 phone session with her and she had the most monotone voice you could imagine. Acted as if she hated her job and didn’t want to talk to me. Said “obviously” and “as I say” about 15 times, which was not only annoying but also contributes to her rudeness. Asked me very generic questions about my issue and that was it. Definitely not worth the money. You’re better off finding an actually good private therapist elsewhere. Better help, you need to DO better!

We appreciate your feedback and can understand how a certain "tone" of voice or turn of phrase might cause a therapist to come across as less caring. We'd like the chance to look into this further and do what we can to improve your experience.
I've requested some more information from you through Trustpilot in hopes of reaching out to you directly to get this sorted.
Thank you,

Waste of money and time
Waste of money and time. “Dr” raker me I was doing the wrong things after I told him repeatedly I don’t know what to do and need help. Criticized me for choosing a different topic every week when he started every session asking what I wanted to talk about. Also this is “Not real therapy” according to my THERAPIST. (BetterHelp - Therapy is how the app is listed and marketed. Have you seen the commercials? They call it therapy. With therapists.)
He spent half the session berating me and disparaging my thinking, goals, decisions, books and courses, healthy activities, and the way I speak and dress. He got defensive when I pointed out he spent ten minutes straight doing so without offering solutions. He then just denied it, and repeated all the criticism in circles until I interrupted him an FEW MINUTES LATER and asked what his solution was.
He criticized my specific goals as VAGUE and immature just because he has a different opinion, and when I kept pushing him for an actual solution, HE said the very VAGUE answer of accountability. Which I asked (obviously) what that specifically means for me. He then said for perhaps the third time that going to real therapy in person would create accountability.
When he first brought up “real” therapy, he said there was nothing to lose w better help by missing a session other than being charged for the week. The last time when he finally attempted, I guess, to explain a solution, he said that real therapy creates accountability bc if you miss a session, you still get charged, contradicting himself. Since, as you can see, he used the same argument for opposite points.
He criticized me for being “all over the place” and not sticking to one topic over consecutive sessions when:
A) HE IS THE THERAPIST. If his Job is not to “coach,” in his own words, guide the session on track, or offer “help” (BetterHelp is the name of this app btw), then what exactly does he think his job is? Where’s HIS accountability? Responsibility?
B) The first thing I told him when I met him was I feel I can’t function. I need help w time management, stress mgt, and completing tasks and projects. So obviously, if for whatever reason, it’s on the patient (it isn’t) to stay on topic, then I made it crystal clear up front and repeatedly that was a PROBLEM I have that I need HELP with.
C) I spent our third session asking him his best practices and how this works best/most successfully, LITERALLY EXPLAINING TO HIM I LEFT MY LAST THERAPIST BC HE DIDN’T have a process. And I felt like he would just ask me what I wanted to talk about each week with no continuity. Then “Dr” raker proceeded to do the EXACT SAME THING….AND BLAME ME AND CRITICIZE ME FOR IT.
He began the session asking what I wanted to talk about (before again later berating me for doing so), and I said what’s most relevant and urgent is stress and emotional management. Which he never addressed.
He told me my goal of making my first sale in three months was vague (????) and immature. My personal goal to lose weight and return to a six pack figure was also met with venom. Vague, immature, he told me I was “doing the wrong things” and had the wrong goals. I’m 35 pounds overweight and my blood pressure is high. So um….right. Stupid goal. He also word for word said “your kids don’t give a f*** if you have abs, they want you to be present.” I had told him already this was a personal goal, mostly for the ENERGY and capacity I would have in this state. I also never mentioned having a problem being present for my kids so I don’t know why he snapped and cursed at me. Must be bc BetterHelp is “coaching” and that’s what a good coach does.
I suspect he is on betterhelp bc he barely got his doctorate and failed on his own. He kept bringing up my missing “several” sessions and missing “several” weeks (I missed two sessions, non consecutively. I saw him one week, missed a session, then saw him the following. Maybe his school didn’t teach English bc he doesn’t understand the words depression, judgment, criticism, several). For whatever reason, he seemed to feel upset about this and take it out on me. But I’m the immature one, something he said twice about my thinking, goals, etc.
That’s not all the messed up stuff he did or said, but I think you see the problem. On top of that laundry list of awful behavior, it irritates me the most that I started out the session saying I need help managing stress, depression, and anger in the moment, then not only did he criticize me for it, and everything else under the sun, AND NEVER OFFER ANYTHING RESEMBLING A SOLUTION, he proceeded to waste the session listening to himself talk, in circles over and over repetitively, attacking me, and effectively PUTTING ME IN THE SITUATION I ASKED FOR HELP WITH.

Took my money and didn't deliver. Steer clear
I signed up for an initial 4 weeks and the first session was fine. The therapist just took down notes. The second session the therapist forgot who I was and spent the entire session frantically trying to remember. This session was pointless and a total waste of my time. I was the. Told my therapist was going on emergency leave to which I was promised she would return in two weeks. I booked another appointment and she did not turn up. I was not informed she could not attend and was left extremely distressed because I was in desperate need of support. The company have said they can only refund for half the month because I attended two sessions. This is absolutely disgraceful - I paid for weekly therapy and was given nothing of the sort. I was midsold and what I paid for was not delivered. Stay well clear of this company. They take your money, don’t give you what you paid for and ignore you after.

Got a dr that did not show up for my appointment, then told me it’s good I’m canceling my membership, super unprofessional for someone who claims to care about other peoples mental health, super disgusting behaviour

Therapist canceled the first session (without any explanation)
I feel very sad by the fact that the first interaction with BetterHelp therapist (I Am Not Allowed To Mention Names) was so disappointing (she canceled the first Live Session).
I was looking forward to start a great therapy program, I waited for so long to finally start therapy and to have trust in the process but unfortunately now I feel worse than before. It’s not a good sign (for the company) if the therapist cancels the first meeting. In my opinion is unacceptable.
I hope I will be paired up with a better trained therapist, hopefully someone that has more years of experience and someone who is reliable.
Response from BetterHelpMar 31, 2023
Hi Monica,
I can understand the disappointment you may be experiencing, and although having a live session canceled with a therapist is not common through our platform, it can happen from time to time. It's of course unfortunate that this would be your first experience with therapy, and we want to be sure to make this right for you to hopefully allow you to get back on track.
I've requested some more information from you through Trustpilot so we can reach out directly and make things right.
Thanks,
BetterHelp Team

For one I thought I paid by the sessions. I think the subscription is a scheme to get paid. I asked about the API for insurance purposes and never got it. Also had complications was hospitalized and did not realize I was being charged even though I was no longer receiving therapy. THAT IS NOT OK AND NOW I AM DEBT!!!
