I was completing a series of questions about my needs and expectations in regards to relationships as I am currently struggling to view whether I am the problem in a few situations involving my spouse. However when I got to the question about “when was the last suicidal thought” and if Ive made specific plan in regards to it. I was then closed off and told that better-help can not help me.
I did not reach out to Betterhelp for this reason as just because I said I had a suicidal thought in the last fortnight and have plans … does not mean I am unhinged and a critical case? I felt like Im getting treated as a crazy person and wasn't even reaching out for this reason. Thanks for no help.

I was looking for therapy
I was looking for therapy.
These people are Ferengi through and through.
within 10 minutes of their service i requested a refund. you will not get it.
you are charged upfront.
they said they couldn't help me. everything i needed was elsewhere.
when i asked "did i just pay a bunch of money to be told you couldn't help me" the reply was " i am no longer comfortable being your therapist" they shut me down and that was it. after requesting a refund they simply said no. literally 156 dollar charge for 10 minutes of my life. I get better help from a twitch streamer in Australia who is a licensed psychotherapist and he does it for free.

I was billed for much more than…
I was billed for much more than expected - around £150 despite only having had one session.
After trying a couple of therapists I cancelled my membership; they were very inexperienced and did not have the kind of expertise I would expect from a professional. It may be that in order to be affordable the platform attracts therapists who are not of the best quality, or are early in their careers. It is much cheaper than traditional therapy, but probably a false economy in the long term!

We try to outline our costs during the inital registration process and on our FAQ page, Helen, but we apologize for any confusion you may have encountered.
We have many therapists, all with varying levels of experience, and our Member Success Team is happy to help with a rematch anytime you feel your therapist isn't the right fit.
I am going to request more information, via TrustPilot, to see if we can help you find the support system you are looking for.

Therapist never showed up
I was supposed to have my first appointment with the therapist chosen for me and she just didn’t show up, she didn’t even tell me she couldn’t make it. I’ve made the time and made arrangements so I’d have the house for myself during this appointment and waited in the video call for half an hour, didn’t get a word from her. I’ve searched for something to help me during such a difficult time in my life and what I ended up with was more stress and frustration. I’ve requested a refund and didn’t get an answer from the Better Help team.

Highway robbery
I was charged for four weeks before even meeting with a therapist! Never had a single session, only one chat from the therapist asking for me to sign up for a call. Nothing else. No one got back to me when i asked for my refund - highway robbery. Do not trust.
Response from BetterHelpJun 15, 2023

They take advantage of people financially.
I thought my billing didn't start until my sessions started. I didn't know. Every therapist since the beginning was the opposite of what I requested. Highly disappointed and out of $416 with no sessions ever. Feeling worse than before I even started this hoax of a process!
Response from BetterHelpJun 15, 2023

$320 for a pamphlet
While the concept is great, it has much room for improvement. This was my first experience with "therapy" and will likely be the last. After paying (upfront, mind you...) $320, I was matched with a "therapist."
I clearly stated that my doctor suggested CBT in the initial information I submitted and clearly stated the issue with which I was seeking help.
After some back and forth introductions and pleasantries, I was provided with a one-page pamphlet containing information I already had (which I stated to the therapist and clearly stated I had already tried), and that can easily be found for FREE with any google search. I was also asked to keep a diary for a week, which I completed and submitted. This was the full extent of what I was provided for my $320 for "therapy" - a dairy and a cheat-sheet that I already had.
When I stated I was open to suggestions or other things to try to address my problem, I was told, "Sorry, I have been trying to think of anything else." Full stop. No suggestions, no help, nothing else.
An upfront cost of $320 for a one page sheet of common knowledge that can be found in any of a dozen other FREE sites, a week-long diary that didn't show anything worthwhile and then a response of "can't think of anything else." (paraphrasing) isn't what I would call CBT or "therapy." After CLEARLY seeing where this is headed, I promptly cancelled my membership.
The downside - an EXHORBINANT cost for no benefit at all. This isn't therapy by any definition I can find. At best, it's self-help with information that can be obtained for free with a simple Google search.
The upside - the concept is great and the platform is very user-friendly.
**Update**
I feel it necessary to leave an updated review.
I was contacted shortly after my original review by their Customer Service Manager, who was very nice. They apologized and offered to set me up with a new therapist. They made what looked to be an excellent suggestion.
I contacted "Ben," the new therapist hoping for some help. Instead, Ben sent me a VERY long "agreement" which he called an "informed consent." This is nothing more than a contract. I read the entire document, which was lengthy. Buried in the middle, it clearly states that Ben had supplied me with his rates, and that I agreed to pay and and all bills he would be sending me. I was flabbergasted.
Not only did "Ben" NOT disclose his rates to me, but agreeing to pay any and all bills? What was my $320 to BetterHelp for? Why would ANYONE agree to be charged mysterious rates and agree to unknown bills? This agreement was required for me to continue with Ben and he wouldn't work with me if I didn't agree to his terms.
When I pointed out that he did NOT disclose his rates (which the agreement said he did), and that I wouldn't agree to such blanket terms, he said, "thank you." Ridiculous.
So, no better experience with a different therapist.
Understand what you are agreeing to, everyone. READ everything before you agree to it. They'll sneak little tidbits like this into their "consent" forms which have absolutely nothing to do with helping you.
I'd downgrade this to zero stars if that was possible.
I've asked for a full refund. We'll see how that goes.

Unprofessional and unethical
Unethical practices with no one to complain to or get help from when your therapist abuses their power over you when you're vulnerable. I don't think I'll go back to therapy ever again because of the poor service offered. It has caused more harm than good. I urge people to see a real therapist in their own area where they are protected by confidentiality laws. Therapist lied about being trained in IFS when I specifically asked for that mode of therapy. Kept putting off IFS for next session when I asked her about it, whenever I wanted to work on something specifically she'd tell me it wasn't a problem, offered advice that anyone could give, talked about her life constantly, she once wasted my time by talking about the weather for 15 mins of the session, shared details of her clients, she once sent a weekly update with her client names and their goals for everyone to see. She shared deeply traumatic personal details about her life that left me uncomfortable and I often felt like I was the one who had to be the therapist. She yelled at me for 5 mins the day before the funeral of a loved one and was disgustingly transphobic. I was so traumatised, I could not attend the funeral. She then accused me of communicating abusively when I told her that her behaviour was not ok. She proceeded to gaslight me and called me a liar and denied yelling on call. She also gloated about how a client who reported her previously was "crazy and unhinged" and how she'll get away with it because the "evidence" was on her side prior to all of this and that should have been a red flag. So she clearly has a pattern of doing this and betterhelp has done nothing about this and continues to suggest her to vulnerable people. These people are not qualified to give care. My experience was hell. Where do you turn to for help when your need therapy for malpractice from a therapist?
Response from BetterHelpJun 12, 2023
I'm so sorry to hear about all of this, Jas. The behavior you're describing is certainly not what we'd expect or stand for from any therapist, and we have an entire team dedicated to ensuring a high quality of care is being provided to members. While the overwhelming majority of feedback we receive from members about their experiences is positive, we also take feedback about poor experiences (like the one you've described) incredibly seriously so we can take action to prevent it.
I've requested more information from you here so that we can look into this further and do everything we can to help. We're here for you and are committed to doing our part to make this right.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you,
BetterHelp Team
