I saw 3 therapists through this site. I didn't find any of them to be informed or helpful. Hope others fund it more useful than me!

Don’t start unless you never want to cancel.
Had a great experience during therapy. Trying to cancel however; different story. They have charged my card twice after cancellation. How does a business charge someone’s card for services not rendered it’s like they’re hoping you don’t pay attention.
Response from BetterHelpSep 26, 2025
Hi Magda,
The cancel process just takes a few clicks, and can be done easily from your Account Settings page. Once you complete that step, it will halt all further payments, unless you resubscribe.
If you were having issues canceling and were subsequently billing for membership time that you did not utilize, please just reach out to our Member Sucess team ([email protected]) to let us know. We can work with you on a refund for unused time!
Thank you,
BetterHelp team

Be prepared to spend a lot
I did Betterhelp on the advice of my cousin who I think did it herself. She's swimming in money so she can I afford it, I literally had to invest most of one month's salary to try it out for about a month. I was desperate and was really hoping to get help. In spite of my preferences, I got matched with a therapist who basically just told me to see a doctor for menopause and to take pills, then proceeded to try and "evangelise" me (when I specified non-religious). It took ages to get matched with another therapist, whom I only got to see twice (good luck with finding / booking a free session, which was graveyard shift for me (so ruined sleep, great for your mental health) cos I am in Asia) and when I did the time got used up talking about nothing and she never got around to asking me about why I needed help in the first place. The interim time got used up signing up for "group therapy" sessions which are basically like Youtube live talks where you get to ask questions during the session. That's how the extremely expensive for me month got used up, it's like signing up for an online class with videos, and then at the end of the month they ask you to subscribe or renew so you can keep flushing money down the toilet. So maybe betterhelp will work for you, but be prepared to spend a lot

We're sorry to hear you were no table to make the most out of your membership, Imogen! Our Member Success team can typically help with a personalized matching process if your first therapist isn't the right fit. They can also help extend your billing cycle to allow more time for you to determine if the new therapist is right.
We'd be happy to see if there's anything we can do to work with you on extending your current membership and offering some direct support if you're willing. I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so that we can reach out to you directly.

Stop payment challenges
The sessions are ok, but once you finish and you want to stop paying - then the issues start.
I had email confirmation that all bank instructions would stop, but it did not. 3 months later and I am still paying. Whenever I try to contact them about this, I get longwinded answers about it is another department and we will not do it etc. However, I am still paying. So be careful when signing up - payment will continue after you have left.

Hi Eben,
We do apologize for any ongoing trouble getting your billing issue resolved. If you reached out to us from an email address NOT linked to the account/payments in question, we have to gather more information to confirm your account ownership, and it generally takes a bit longer.
It seems our team was able to ultimately get this sorted out for you, and we wish you the best of luck moving forward.

given up all hope of therapy!!
My experience with BetterHelp has been incredibly disappointing and honestly feels like a complete scam.
First, a therapist cancelled my session just one hour before it was scheduled, without any explanation or follow-up. That session was part of my weekly plan — something I paid for — and I got nothing in return. No offer to reschedule, no refund, and absolutely no accountability. Funny how if I cancel, I get charged — but when they do, they walk away with my money.
I sent multiple emails asking for help, and was met with silence from customer service. Eventually someone did respond, claiming they were “here to help” — but the only “help” offered was for me to pay $880 AUD a month just to try and get another session. Nothing about making things right, or acknowledging their own failure. Just a money grab.
I then tried to see if I could find a therapist who actually suited my needs — I was clear that I wanted someone with similar beliefs and values (I’m a white Christian male). Instead, I was matched with therapists whose profiles and identities were completely incompatible with what I requested, including Muslim women and LGBTQ individuals. That’s not personal — it’s about compatibility, and the platform ignored everything I clearly asked for.
On top of that, when I switched therapists, all my notes, goals, and session history were completely wiped. Nothing transferred over. No warning. No way to get it back. It’s like none of my work mattered. I was left starting over, alone, and without any support.
After all this, I’ve still had zero real communication from BetterHelp about what happened, why it happened, or how they plan to fix it.
If someone from BetterHelp actually cares, I’d love to hear from you — because right now, all I see is a platform that claims to support mental health but does the exact opposite: takes your money, deletes your progress, and disappears when things go wrong.

We're so sorry to hear about this experience, Matthew! Our Member Success team should reply within one business day to your email, so we definitely want to look into this and see if there's something going on on our end.
As long as there is still prepaid time on your membership (and not a payment failure), we can extend your membership to allow more time. I'll be happy to look into this for you as well.
You should have received a warning before switching therapists that doing so would mean you would lose access to previous conversations. I'm sorry if that did not occur or was not clear! We can rematch you temporarily so you can access those again, and make copies as needed.
I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so our management team can reach out to you directly.

I was informed during my third session…
I was informed during my third session that they (the therapist) could not help my level of trauma and I should go elsewhere. It would have been nice to have been told somewhere on the app or website that they can only help certain levels of trauma, if that is the case. I also attended one of their classes and found the speaker to be offensive with their attitude towards people who were sharing and asking questions. I now have no therapist and will have to start over again. That’s pretty bad. I think this company needs to be more honest about the level of therapy they can give, which, to me, is quite light.
Response from BetterHelpJul 18, 2025
Thank you for sharing your experience, and we are sorry to hear that the first therapist you were matched with did not feel like they could help you! While online therapy has many of the same benefits as in-person treatment, it cannot be a substitute in every case, and sometimes a higher level of care is necessary.
All that said, we would be happy to try and work with you to extend your membership and see if there is another therapist in our network who can help if you are open to this. I've requested the email address linked to your account in case you'd like to have a member of our management team reach out to you directly to work with you on this.

Tough but honest
To be completely honest, I think BetterHelp is a bit of a grift. I personally enjoyed working with my therapist, but it seems like a lot of their network is comprised of folks who aren't super qualified thus it took me forever to find someone. And the app made it seem like I was being charged $80/month, but that is the weekly price. To be clear, they didn't scam me, but it seems a little disingenuous to put that in the app instead of how you get charged which was $320/month for me. And frankly $320/month is just not worth it to me. TL;DR capitalism + therapy is not a great combo in my opinion
Response from BetterHelpJun 23, 2025
We appreciate your candid feedback, David, and we're sorry that you had a hard time finding a therapist that felt qualified to work with you. All therapists must be fully and independently licensed in order to be considered for a position working on the platform, but it can be sometimes more challenging to find someone who has expertise in more specific focus areas.
In any case, if you haven't already, please consider reaching out to our Member Success team through the 'Contact Us' page and we may be able to help work with you on pricing should you wish to work with your therapist again in the future!

Unqualified therapists
Update - I have been issued with an apology and full refund which I appreciate but I am going to leave the above review as it is so that other people can ensure they know exactly from their therapists before signing up for therapy.
I specifically requested Dialectical Behaviour therapy (DBT) and was lead to believe that Better Help have certified DBT practitioners with experience, this is not the case. I was matched with a therapy who has no idea with DBT is despite having this on her profile. It appears that not one of their therapists is a DBT therapist and my experience so far has been frustrating. I have asked for my money back as I have no faith that they have the therapist I am looking for yet they just promising me they will find me a DBT therapist!
Response from BetterHelpMay 28, 2025
We're sorry that your initial match did not have the DBT experience you requested, Marie. They should not have that listed as a treatment modality if they cannot provide it. This type of experience is not common, and we would appreciate the opportunity to have our Clinical Operations team investigate further.
We can also have a manager follow up to be sure that this all gets resolved for you in a way you're satisfied with. I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so we can reach out to you directly.
