Waste of both time and money
I approached this service with optimism, as NHS waiting times are unfortunately long, and I was hopeful for a quicker solution. However, my experience was deeply disappointing and did not meet my expectations in any way. I was referred to a therapist within 24-48 hours, as expected, but unfortunately, the session itself was not helpful. Early into the appointment, within the first two minutes, I was told to stabilise my camera despite holding it as still as possible on my knee (due to video appointments being through the app on a mobile). This comment caused me to feel self-conscious for the remainder of the session. Throughout the appointment, as I shared personal details about my mental health, the therapist would often respond with little more than a brief "yes," followed by long, uncomfortable silences. It was also apparent that the therapist had limited understanding of my mental health conditions, which was particularly concerning given their purported qualifications in this area. In contrast, I was recently accepted for NHS therapy, and after just 30 minutes of my first session, I felt understood and comfortable, which highlights the stark difference in quality of care. Based on my experience, I would not recommend BetterHelp. The service is expensive, the therapist quality is poor, and the overall experience was, unfortunately, a waste of both time and money.

We appreciate your feedback, TS, and are sorry for the poor experience with this initial therapist you were matched with on our platform. We care a great deal about the quality of care being provided by the therapists on our platform, and would appreciate the chance to present this information to our Clinical Operations team. That said, I'll request the email address linked to your account so that we can follow up! Most importantly, we are really happy to hear you were able to find the support you were seeking for your mental health! Take care, BetterHelp Team
