BetterHelp will quietly siphon off of your HSA or FSA and then you'll be standing at your child's orthodontist or pediatrician with a large bill due, and there won't be any money in the account because BetterHelp has been taking $320 per month quietly, without your realizing it, for services not rendered, for therapy not scheduled or used. They target vulnerable people at vulnerable times in life and leave them with more distress and anxiety than they ever had before their encounter with this scam company. Btw - who puts so many five-star reviews on Trustpilot? Employees of BetterHealth, I'd wager!

Automatically charging prospective patients and locking them in for a weekly membership without even matching them with a therapist is a bad look. It was obvious the order or priority for BetterHelp was to get my money first and then offer care later. I was charged without even having an initial conversation or consultation and had to track getting my refund for several days. I immediately cancelled my membership once I realized I was charged even though the website indicated BetterHelp wouldn’t charge until I was matched and had a session. How does BetterHelp not realize the mental vulnerability of individuals who are signing up for this service? To prematurely charge without even having an initial therapy session indicates BetterHelp is primarily a business focused on maximizing revenue and not a service concerned about the mental welfare of its patients. There should be prompts for insurance, promotional credits, or other discounts that may be offered instead of demanding a credit card upfront and immediately charging. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with the approach and deterred from utilizing this service. My underlying reluctance to begin therapy stems from the notion that therapists will only start to care once they are paid. While I understand that being a therapist is a job at the end of the day and they need to get paid at some point, making payment step one is a very predatory practice and deceitful for people who need help.

I checked the option for a male therapist, for men's issues counseling. The next day I was matched with a trans/non-binary female. I requested a switch and was presented only 3 options, 2 of which were women. The one man had restricted availability and was booking his initial appointment a month out. Of course they charge upfront, and at this point I was already regretting choosing better help and wanted to explore alternatives. I cancelled my membership before booking any appointment but that doesn't trigger a refund. I had to contact support, and of course instead of just releasing the refund they tried to convince me to stay. I said no, just the refund please. They never emailed me back, and in a few days I received notice that I was matched to another female therapist whose specialties were wildly different than what I listed in my profile. Had to submit a dispute with my credit card.

I wish I could give it 0 stars. First, I had a therapist in England who made a racist remark about the fact my mom is Japanese. Needless to say, I switched. Little did I know this one would be even worse somehow - her name is Kelly. Her SON would walk into her room during sessions, and she also sent me an ESSAY of a message threatening to stop being my therapist if I questioned her ever again. Ironically, I later found out (from an actually qualified mental health worker) I have OCD; if you don’t know, questioning and doubting are pretty normal for OCD people. But when I questioned her technique, which looking back WAS actually terrible advice, she sent me that essay, and being that I was in such a low place mentally, I begged her to remain my therapist. The worst part is, after I spent $690 at betterhelp, I went to a really helpful online therapist who actually helped me which cost me another $1,000, and when I asked betterhelp for a refund, they refused due to it being over 12 months. Funny how a mental health company doesn’t understand the idea of processing after a bit of time. No empathy either, nor accountability. They also refused to give me temporary access to my messages with Kelly to take screenshots. Disgusting scam company taking advantage of people desperate to feel good. Absolutely pathetic.

So bad. I indicated I wanted to try EMDR therapy the therapist I was matched with was not trained in this. My second therapist told me about a client of hers that was being repeatedly abused by her husband. What should she do? I’m the client! The therapist shouldn’t be coming to me with her problems. indicated what the issue I wanted to work through was I was then told by the third therapist that that’s an issue she doesn’t feel she is able to work with, in all I tried four different therapists on the platform. I will not be trying them again.

Very low quality therapists, did more harm than good. Stay away and find a proper counselling. Stay WELL away!

Christian faith based counseling that doesn’t even have the guts to be truthful about what they do, which means they are likely up to something. I believe that something is recruiting. If you ask for a non-religious therapist, even if you are deeply depressed, suicidal, no matter; they will send you an email saying they are “trying to match you with an appropriate therapist” and then 9 months will go by… and you will never hear from them again. If they aren’t doing anything shady, why not just say, « We only do Christian counseling. » They don’t give a hoot about actually helping people without discrimination; just about recruiting new Christian Nationalists.
