Horrible experience. I got matched with the worst therapist (to be honest, "therapist") I've ever had, wasted a whole hour of my life, and have been trying to get cancel my account and get refunded for unused sessions for weeks now. Their customer service representatives just keep deflecting me, and I'm SO frustrated. Never use this service, it's the absolute worst.

Hi team,
Hi team,
There was a withdraw of $75.00 on my Visa account. I did not authorize this, nor am I looking for services. I'm currently no working and almost committed suicide due to all the stress and financial worry.
If this could please be refunded to me and take me off any emailing list, it would greatly be appreciated. I am very scared at the moment, as any loss of money for me, at this time, is a lot.
Kind regards,
Angela Flores

I tried to send a message
I tried to send a message, but website forces me to answer a set of questions if therapy is too expensive or I’m not ready yet. If you select the wrong answer, no way to go back. Horrible user experience put me off trying to use it in the first place

Therapist Ghosting and a Waste of Money
I signed up for BetterHelp initially with financial help, and I was planning to try it for 1 week. I was hoping to have genuine talks with a therapist who would reply at an acceptable pace, as that was what was advertised on BetterHelp; the ability to text, call, and schedule live sessions with your therapist.
However, all the live sessions available are either 3 am or 6 am for me. Even after trying to switch therapists, every therapist was in the US timezone (I'm in Asia), and I was not informed of this.
Also, I had to follow up twice with a long message to finally get a reply from my therapist, and the only thing they replied was, "let's schedule a live session."
Overall, my experience has been less than satisfactory. As someone who was willing to try BetterHelp to find assistance during a dark time, this was definitely below my expectations.
And I feel like I've wasted 1 week of my first subscription essentially doing nothing, nothing changed, and I got no replies nor help, the therapist change system was lackluster, support is slow, and it felt like a waste of money.

I signed up to this when under duress…
I signed up to this when under duress and unfortunately did not realise that they did not do in person councilling sessions which I was looking for , so in short they have charged me £500 for a service I haven't even used once , I did email to try and sort the problem but Bryanna just said its a membership and thats that and would give me an extended month which is useless as its the wrong service , all in all I didn't expect this from a therapy service as you'd think they would know how taking £500 off someone who is already saying that they are stressed and need help could effect them, It all seems quite immoral to me and dissapointing.
Response from BetterHelpSep 14, 2026
Hi Harrison,
We're sorry for any misunderstanding regarding the membership billing structure. If you haven't used the service for live sessions and do not plan to, we can likely work with you on a full or partial refund. I've requested the email address linked to your account so a member of our management team can follow up with you directly to make sure this is sorted out.

Disappointing and Unprofessional Experience
I would not recommend BetterHelp/Teen Counseling based on my experience.
First, the subscription model deserves more transparency. I paid approximately $350 CAD per month for a plan advertised as including up to four live sessions. However, you still pay the same amount if your therapist has limited availability, takes time off, or cannot see you every week.
I enrolled my 18-year-old son after an incident affected his mental health. He liked his therapist as a person, but after several months he decided this type of therapy was not a good fit for him and stopped using the service.
We later decided to pursue a legal matter related to the incident. On the advice of a lawyer, I asked his therapist for specific documentation/session information. I clearly explained what I needed and why. She asked what was required, I explained it, and she agreed to provide it within about three weeks. This was documented in the platform chat.
The deadline passed. I followed up and was told she was very busy and would get it done ASAP. More weeks passed. I followed up again. This continued for almost three months.
During that time, my son was no longer using the service, but I kept paying the monthly subscription because I was concerned that cancelling would cut off communication with the therapist while we were still waiting. I explained that continuing to pay was causing financial stress.
I contacted Teen Counseling support. They told me therapists are not required to provide this type of documentation and that it is at their discretion. My issue was that she had already agreed to do it. Had she told me from the beginning that she could not provide it, I would not have spent months waiting and paying for a service we were no longer using.
Teen Counseling support also told me therapists on the platform could not provide diagnoses. I was not asking for a diagnosis.
Eventually, the therapist told me she had sent the document, but I received nothing. Two more days passed and I had to follow up again. She then said her Gmail was full and she would resend it in 10 minutes. Hours later, I finally received it.
After waiting nearly three months, I received a generic one-page letter that did not contain what we had discussed. It also stated that my son had Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which was especially confusing because Teen Counseling support had told me their therapists were not permitted to diagnose clients.
When I explained that this was not what we had agreed on, she said this was typically what she provides to clients. That was frustrating because our earlier written conversation clearly showed what I had requested and that she agreed.
I was also surprised to see that her contact information showed she was located in the United States. That led me to research whether the documentation would even be useful in an Ontario legal proceeding. I then found information in the platform's own terms and policies about limitations surrounding the use of the service in legal matters.
This raised another major concern: there seems to be a disconnect between the platform's policies, what Teen Counseling support tells customers, and what therapists themselves understand or provide. If the therapist had been fully aware of the platform's limitations, I do not understand why she agreed to prepare documentation for a legal matter, or why she later sent a letter diagnosing my son after support told me diagnoses were not permitted.
My biggest issue is the lack of communication, consistency, transparency, and professionalism. I spent almost three months following up, paid hundreds of dollars for a service my son was no longer using, and ultimately received something completely different from what had been discussed.
Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend finding a qualified local therapist and paying per session instead. BetterHelp/Teen Counseling is marketed as convenient and affordable, but my experience was the opposite. I would not use it again.
Response from BetterHelpSep 14, 2026
Hi Kelly,
We're very sorry to hear about the issues you had receiving the documentation you were seeking. We do not currently have Canadian therapists licensed on our platform, and it is up to their professional discretion as independently licensed clinicians how and when they can provide documentation. That said, we understand that this caused trouble for you and your family, and we'd like to look into this situation further.
I've requested the email address attached to your Teen Counseling account so that we can have a a support manager follow up.

These people are not even psychiatrists!
At the advice of my doctor, I signed up to get prescriptions refilled since I did not have insurance. I specifically stated this when I signed up and agreed to their services. 2 days later they sent me a message saying they had matched me with a provider. I spent quite a bit filling out all her worksheets and explaining everything only for her to respond…. I’m sorry we don’t fill prescriptions…. We are not psychiatrist. We are just social workers…. OK well that is not what I signed up for and on top of it. They want to charge you $65 a week to talk to a social worker that can’t even do anything for you….. there are many more options out there research them accordingly. This one is an overpriced rip off. Unfortunately, I’ve wasted 3 days on them now waiting for them to finally get something going. That was not even what I signed up for.

Hi Jennfier,
We're so sorry for any confusion or inconvenience! While we recently have incorporated a BetterHelp Psychiatry arm to our platform, there is a different sign-up process for this; it sounds like you signed up for our talk therapy service.
I've gone ahead and requested the email address linked to your account so we can have a member of our management team follow up with you directly to see if we can get this back on track for you.
