Great for people in the UK
In the UK, NHS mental health services are extremely lacking, for example, NHS secondary care (support workers) are only allowed to work with people for 1 year, then you're on your own (if you can even get care). DBT was cancelled in my area in 2020 because of coronavirus and then stayed closed because of funding. NHS Primary care denied my access to a therapist despite being diagnosed with BPD because my trauma "was not severe enough" and even then, if I had got it, I was told sessions would only be a few short sessions. NHS CBT is for 6 weeks/6 sessions and that's it. As I see it, the NHS is "failing" because our government won't put enough money towards the system, and are actually encouraging people and private businesses to go private - off the NHS. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if we had the same setup as America - like having insurance plans but we don't, it's a pay per session. Not to mention the fact that people don't even know where to go because mental health services were already a problem for years. Betterhelp means if you can afford it, you can access it. They do have different plans based on your income rather than one set price. Your membership includes endless classes (webinars), a therapist session once a week, and 1-2 free groups a week. Because the service includes America, you can usually jump into a group straight away if you feel you need it. Alongside that, you can message your therapist (though I don't because I believe we should have boundaries), and even ask your therapist for material that either betterhelp can provide, or your individual therapist. It took me two times to find a therapist who suited my needs. I initially went with a therapist who I believe was trying to make betterhelp her main income - meaning you were seen as a number, a statistic, and I believe those are the people who burn out and quit the platform after a while. They typically are fresh outta university with only a few years under their belt. That therapist would tell me how she didn't like all sorts of things on betterhelp and I felt like I had to be her therapist during the session! I then switched to Shelia W. I've since recommended her to others because she offers phone/video and I prefer the phone!! the last one I had didn't offer this. Sometimes I feel like I'm just babbling away but she does listen and it's nice to hear another perspective. I believe if you go on a group therapy session and you like the therapist who's hosting, you can actually message BetterHelp and request to be under that therapist (if they have any spaces). This means you can work with any therapist, across America on the platform too! I thought I would mention this, incase you can't find a therapist in the UK on this platform that would suit your needs. You can also use the journal function and have it sent to your therapist to review, I don't use this function much because I don't like my data being uploaded like that - I'd rather use paper and review when I talk to my therapist. All in all, it's a good platform for people in the UK where mental health services are severely lacking. :)
