Subscription model is a trap
Their subscription model is a trap. You get charged £260 a month regardless of whether you're using the sessions. You can't pay per session - you have to lock yourself in. Same capitalist exploitation that got us all into this terrible mental state in the first place

We appreciate your feedback regarding the membership billing structure, and apologize for any concern. While your payments provide you access to a suite of services on the platform, we understand that live sessions with the assigned therapist are often a key piece. Our Member Success team can provide billing extensions to help provide time to have make-up sessions, upon request.
In case you have not yet been able to get this sorted out with our team, I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so we can reach out to you directly.

They should be ashamed of themselves…
They should be ashamed of themselves praying on the vulnerable. I signed up but because of holiday mine and the therapist I could not fit all the sessions in a month, charged again this week still can’t fit them in. This is ridiculous so I thought pause or actually cancel my membership because I am effectively paying triple rate for counselling. They say you can cancel anytime but what they fail to mention is if you do your ability to see your counsellor is stopped immediately ( regardless if you are in credit or not) what a bunch of crooks. Once again live and learn so out of pocket and in desperate need of help.

Hi Nicholas,
We understand there may have been some frustration and confusion with the billing agreement. Each payment allow you access to the entire suite of membership features for a set period of time (either one week or four weeks). A weekly live session is available to you to use, as well as the ability to enroll in several Classes, Group Sessions, and other wellness tools. If your therapist's availability doesn't work with your schedule, our Member Success team can help to provide a membership extension to help allow you to book a makeup session.
In any case, we want to be sure we can help you get this resolved if you haven't already been in contact with our team. I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so that we can follow up with you directly!

I went into Bettethelp.com looking st…
I went into Bettethelp.com looking st their services. Background on me, I taught marketing as major private university, as well as general psychology and business / speech communication. While surely Betterhelp.com has some great shrinks, I'm concerned that especially their Meta ties are problematic. In case anyone wants to further examine Betterhelp's overly extensive sharing of client/patient personal information, you will need to take an extended amount of time to read all of their terms and conditions, etc.
Comprehensively fielding Betterhelp's unusually extensive process (again, Ts and Cs, and more) and trying, likely in vain, to preclude the overly extensive dissemination of our data to third-parties is not at all what most patient's deem appropriate. The worst of these social media (not the least of which leads Meta, case in point), advertisers, ad nauseam, have intentions / actions that do not well serve patients much to most of the time.

Disappointed with the support before even getting the service I paid for
On the 4th of June, I decided to subscribe to BetterHelp with high hopes that I could get professional help immediately
On the 5th of June, I got matched with a therapist. However, I was unable to schedule a session due to the platform error, which I reported immediately to support (Feedback #D6D1258). They said that it is a technical issue that they can't fix yet. So they offered me to manually schedule the therapy session. I sent them my preferred date and time (which was the earliest possible schedule according to the therapist's timetable). And I got no response, no scheduled session, nor the therapy itself the next day.
On 7 June (2 days after my last email to them), I got a reply, and they asked me to choose a different date and time. On the same day, I sent them a separate email addressing how disappointed I was with the platform and the support. Imagine paying for a weekly subscription, hoping to get help, but you are left with 5 days remaining without getting the help you paid for. I have also emphasized that the subscription fee of USD 45 per week represents a significant financial commitment for someone living in a country with a much weaker currency.
To my surprise, I got a response within less than 5 hours this time. They asked whether I would like to schedule the therapy while they extend my subscription to full 1 week, or cancel and refund my membership. Even in my disappointment, I was giving them a second chance due to my desperate need for professional help.
It is now the 10th of June. 4 emails later, I still receive no response, no follow-up, and am still far from the help I needed. I have asked them for a cancellation and refund because I will seek help elsewhere.
Perhaps this will get their attention? I don't know, I do feel like BetterHelp does not live up to its name and branding.
Not only do I waste my time, but this experience also left me with bigger sadness in me, whether I deserve help or not.

Hi Sasha,
Thank you for sharing about your experience. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality support to members, as we know how difficult it can be to take the step to ask for help! That being said, we want to be sure this case is investigated with our Member Success management team, and that we do whatever we can to turn this experience around for you.
I've requested the email address linked to your account so that we can follow up with you directly and make sure you are taken care of in the way that works best for you.

Deceptive $0 Estimate and Refusal to Apply Valid EAP Benefits
I am filing a formal complaint against BetterHelp for deceptive billing practices, bait-and-switch pricing, and a refusal to honor valid in-network insurance benefits.
Prior to signing up for BetterHelp, I received a valid Employee Assistance Program (EAP) authorization for therapy through United Healthcare, which prompted me to look for covered online therapy platforms. When I selected BetterHelp and initially signed up, the platform provided me with a written, guaranteed estimate of $0.00 per session.
Relying on this $0 estimate and my pre-approved EAP coverage, I proceeded with booking and attending my sessions. Unbeknownst to me, BetterHelp delayed submitting my claims to my insurance provider for several months while they were getting my provider "rostered." When the claims finally processed months later, BetterHelp hit my account with a sudden, unannounced batch charge of over $600 for past sessions. Had I been accurately informed of the $86 per-session cost upfront, I would have made different financial and medical decisions.
Furthermore, BetterHelp is an in-network provider for United Healthcare and is contractually obligated to accept UHC EAP authorizations. I possess two valid EAP authorization codes that cover a total of 4 sessions.
Instead of billing the EAP program as contracted, BetterHelp erroneously billed my standard medical insurance. When I provided the valid authorization codes and asked them to correct the claims, BetterHelp's support supervisors explicitly refused in writing. They stated that they are "unable to update the payment method for past sessions attended retroactively" simply because their internal automated software does not have the capability to do so.
A company's internal software limitations do not void my valid, pre-approved medical benefits or absolve BetterHelp of their contractual obligations as an in-network vendor. I have exhausted all internal customer service channels, and BetterHelp continues to refuse manual ledger corrections for both the EAP codes and the erroneous $0 estimate.

Hi Gerald,
We're sorry about the frustration you've experienced throughout the process of attempting to apply EAP or insurance benefits. While we work with many EAPs and insurance carriers, we do not work with all. Typically, if we are in contract with your EAP, we would be able to first help you get those benefits set up. When those benefits expire, you can then check your insurance eligibility for coverage of continued BetterHelp services.
In any case, we appreciate you providing us with your contact information so we can investigate this further. We will follow up with you with more information soon.

I joined BetterHelp to find a good therapist
I joined BetterHelp to find a good therapist that would be a good match for me. And that's where the problem started. I was matched with a therapist, but because I couldn't verify my phone number, it was showing me an error message. I contacted BetterHelp customer support and they set up the session either way. Half an hour before the session, I logged in and the join video session button wasn't working. I missed my session even though I was looking forward to it. I think customer support could have guided me better and made this happen for me, and they just didn't. I think this is the last time that I ever try this platform. I genuinely had a horrible experience.
Response from BetterHelpJun 11, 2026
Hi Arianit,
We can understand your disappointment and are sorry to hear you were not able to ultimately access your live session due to the phone number registration issue. Our developers have been made aware of this situation, and while we are always happy to provide membership extensions to help make up for these technical issues, it appears you've already been helped with a cancellation and refund. If you'd ever be open to giving us another try, we can have our Technical Support team work with you to get this matter sorted out.
All the best,
BetterHelp Team
