Not allowing call forwarding is a huge mistake! It makes the service virtually useless in this day and age. When I asked about it, they gave me some BS about keeping costs down. Then they actually suggested setting up the voicemail to give callers my alternate phone number! If I wanted people to call another number, I would give it to them in the first place. Ridiculous! On a side note, if you look at the actual reviews, you will see that there only 2 reviews that rank them above Poor since June of 2017. Meaning that since that time, over 95% of all reviews rate them as Poor or Bad.

Great service ( BUT ) music on hold sucks, it’s horrible and needs to be removed. I’d rather have silence than listen to that.

Basic talk worked fine, but it's always the cancelling of service that brings out the thievery in companies. I called December 2018 to cancel (you can't cancel online). I spoke to a gentleman who tried every possible way to stop me from cancelling my service. He acknowledged that I haven't made a single call on Basictalk in over a year. I told him several times, "No thank you, please cancel my service". After about 5 minutes, the Basic talk rep finally said they would cancel my service at the end of my billing cycle. From December 2018 through May 2020, Basic Talk continued to charge my credit card for the service. When I spoke to a new Customer service rep today, they told me that in the last call, I asked the Basic Talk Rep to keep my service open until the end of the billing cycle, and that I would call again to cancel my service. I asked the rep today, "Why after not using your service for over a year, would I call to request cancellation, but then ask the Basic Talk rep to keep my account open until the end of the billing cycle?" The Basic Talk rep I spoke to today conceded that it made no sense, but that's what the notes said in their computer system. I HOPE the customer rep I spoke with today was ethical, but that still wont return the $300 they took from my account for the past 18 months. Beware signing up for monthly subscriptions that automatically charge your account. The honeymoon ends as soon as you give your credit card information.

I felt good about basic talk at first. It is a Walmart service, and thought it would be good. The service itself was very good, not a problem, but they raised the rate on me to like $14 per month. I still paid even though I knew I could get a better price - even free actually..... I recently tried to cancel the service ---> and you CANNOT CANCEL ONLINE - YOU MUST CALL THEM. I called and the (Indian guy) on the phone said he'd have to call me back in a few days ----- BUT DIDN'T. Now I've gotta try and call them again tomorrow....It seems I may have to cancel my credit card to stop the monthly charges on this service. - What service, it's been off for over a month now???? HERE IS THE PHONE # TO CANCEL SERVICE --------- 1-866-382-3770

I was a customer of BasicTalk for several years. Their service was advertised at $10 a month, but fees and taxes pushed that up to more than $13. Over time, that went up to $14. Then, in mid-2019, they announced a new discretionary $2 fee (not a tax, meaning that this was a fee that they were collecting). I sent them an email telling them they were already charging too much, but they added the fee anyway -- but they added $3.00 a month, not $2.00! That got me really steamed, so I switched to another company. Seven dollars in taxes and fees for a service that costs $10 is just too much. BasicTalk is the "cheap" division of Vonage. Vonage itself charges more than Ma Bell used to charge for phone service.

Had trouble transferring our old phone number from Frontier. Basic Talk said the address on the account was incorrect. We checked with Frontier and we had the correct address. The 'chat' support is ineffective in resolving issues. They had no desire to help resolve the issue but simply kept telling us that they needed the correct address. Cancelling service to work with a different voip provider. I guess the cost of operating cheaply is poor service.

Very POOR quality when more than one device is using the internet at the same time. I have one of the best internet services out there and if I'm using my computer and phone at the same time people cannot hear me.
