Total rip off. My practice used Athena for 13 years, I didn’t realize they were gradually increasing the rate they charged me every year. I was promised a rate reduction and instead they dropped me as a client, cancelled my account and kept charging me over $6000 a month for a closed account, for 3 months!, now I have to sue them. They are a total nightmare. Stay away!

This is being generous
This is being generous. There should be a federal law against companies that can sell a so called service and then provide ZERO tech support. They say, get in touch with your provider which gives you and number to get a hold a series of voice mails. Next time you look for a provider ask them who powers your patient portal and if they say Athena Health, RUN!

Do not trust billing services, you will lose thousands
I had a solo private practice and used Athena as our EMR and billing company. They routinely would close insurance claims if the claim was denied and not bill the patient or place the claim in a hold bucket for our office to review. They cost me thousands of dollars. Ultimately I closed my practice. When I went to cancel/terminate my service with them they sent an email that stated my case for termination of services had been resolved. No further contact until they started charging me $545 per month for absolutely no services provided. They stated I had not followed the instructions in the email that stated my case for termination of services was resolved. There were no additional instructions to follow. They were then able to send me the required termination letter via email and services were terminated at the end of the month but no before I had to pay for additional monthly "services". They have very shady business practices and should not be trusted. I would not recommend.

Congratulations Doctor! Your new responsibility: providing software support
No support for patients on their support number. The support people refer you back to the doctor's office for support on Athena's software. The doctor's office has no idea how to answer questions on Athena's software.
I do not know what the sales pitch is to potential buyers of Athena Health software. Keep in mind if you buy the software, YOU will be responsible for providing software support on challenging issues.

Bias and easily manipulated
I had a very concerning experience with this nurse practitioner that I feel other parents should be aware of. During my interactions, she demonstrated what appeared to be clear bias and made serious allegations, including stating that I was a danger to my child, without providing objective evidence to support such claims.
What was especially troubling was that she misrepresented her communications. I was told one thing directly, but later discovered that her written statements to the other parent differed significantly. This lack of transparency undermines trust and raises concerns about professional integrity.
Additionally, after a licensed psychiatrist identified signs of parental alienation by the other parent, instead of reassessing her position, the nurse practitioner appeared to double down. She continued to support and vouch for the parent exhibiting those behaviors, even suggesting that those actions were beneficial to the child’s well-being and mental health. This contradiction was difficult to understand and concerning given the seriousness of the situation.
In matters involving children and mental health, objectivity, accuracy, and clear communication are critical. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those standards. I would strongly encourage others to seek a second opinion and ensure that all professionals involved remain impartial and evidence-based in their assessments.

We are Athenas first FQHC clients
We are Athenas first FQHC clients, of our Administration didn't know this, because they didn't do their research. Athena purchased Centricity, do that meant we weren't going to have Pharmacy EMR, so our company went with Athena, of course I had no input, bit I had done my research. Now after 4 years they are still the worst EMR Company that I have worked with in my 30 plus years as a medical biller/Revenue Cycle Analyst. They still don't know the rules or guidelines of coding, billing. etc. After they suckered my facility into going with them, within 6 months they had the nerve to advertise on there website that they are expertise in FQHC Mental health billing. Had the nerve to tell my Director of Revenue Cycle that they were going to start adjusting or writing of claims and of course by my Director not knowing what she's doing, she said absolutely nothing. Never have I ever worked with an EMR who are scammers and crooks.

**Extremely Disappointed — AthenaHealth Took My Deposit Even Though They Could Not Deliver What Was Promised**
**Extremely Disappointed — AthenaHealth Took My Deposit Even Though They Could Not Deliver What Was Promised**
I have been in practice for 29 years and have worked with over 60,000 patients and clients. I do not write reviews like this lightly, but my experience with AthenaHealth has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a company.
My team and I were outgrowing our current software, so I spoke with AthenaHealth’s sales representative, Henry Schupp. I explained in detail exactly what our practice needed from a new software system. Henry repeatedly assured me that AthenaHealth could meet those needs — either directly through Athena or through one of their third-party partners.
Based on those assurances, my team and I were excited to move forward. I paid the required deposit of **$3,675.00** because I believed AthenaHealth could do what I had been told it could do.
Then onboarding began. We worked with Diann Gilbert, who was fun, informative, professional--not being sarcastic--she was really great! The problem was that during onboarding, Diann kept explaining that AthenaHealth could **not** do several of the things that Henry had specifically been told it could do.
After several weeks of back-and-forth, the issue became so obvious that during our final onboarding appointment, Diann actually asked us, **“Why are you using AthenaHealth?”**
My office manager’s response was, **“I don’t know.”**
At that point, it was clear to everyone involved that AthenaHealth was not the right fit and could not deliver what we had been promised so i requested the return of my $3,675 deposit.
That is when Stephanie Kammerer, Henry’s manager, became involved. Unfortunately, Stephanie and AthenaHealth's finance team refused to return my **$3,675.00 deposit**, even though the company could not provide the solution we were sold.
That is the part I find completely unacceptable and in truth absolutely disgusting!
AthenaHealth accepted my money based on representations made during the sales process. Then, once onboarding revealed that AthenaHealth could not actually do what we needed, they still kept the deposit.
To make the situation even more disappointing, Stephanie Kammerer did not personally respond to my concerns in a meaningful way--she used AI. She forgot to remove the AI prompt so the beginning of my email read:
“Here’s a version that maintains a professional tone, reinforces the contractual position, and addresses the threat without escalating it.” (see attached photo's below)
That made the entire situation feel even more impersonal and dismissive. After taking my deposit and refusing to return it, AthenaHealth could not even take the time to respond to me in a thoughtful, human way.
Now in truth my gut tells me that Henry and Stephanie are not bad people they just work for a really, really, really, really, really bad company.
This company sold us on a system that could not do what we were told it could do, took a **$3,675.00 deposit**, and then refused to return that money after the truth came out during onboarding.
So please do yourself a big favor and run, run, run, run (don't walk) away from AthenaHealt!
After 29 years in practice, I have never had an experience like this with another software company.
My recommendation is simple: stay far away from AthenaHealth.
This experience was frustrating, disappointing, expensive, and, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.
