About Ants on a Melon

Ants on a Melon (AOAM) is a small, independent company based in Springfield, Oregon that designs and hand-assembles modular LED light tools for flow artists, light painters, performers, and festival-goers around the world. Founded by Master Toymaker Joel Pinkham in 2012, AOAM blends artistry and technology to build gear that runs on one programmable platform. The core of the system is the RGB Critter BT, a color-changing flashlight that powers more than 200 twist-on tools and accessories. From that one light you can build fiber optic light whips (the BitWhip and Double BitWhip), light painting tools like blades and tubes, saber and staff kits, fiber optic costume lighting, and more. One light becomes a whole kit, so you carry less and spend less over time. The RGB Critter BT was named the number one RGB flashlight for light painting by Stephen Knight Photography and earned an Editor's Choice from Photofocus. With a small, passionate team, no outside investors, a 2-year warranty on Critter-powered kits, and real human support, AOAM focuses on thoughtful design, creative freedom, durability, and staying closely connected to the community that inspires it.

Brings my creativity to full potential
I've been a lightwhipper in the Philippines for almost 4 years now and AOM have always been my dream whip. Since I am a graphic artist, It brought more creativity in me esp. customizing my own colors. And I love that it has a lot of features esp the audio sensor cause I enjoy flowing to diff types of genres. But the only downside I see is their RGB Critter heaviness. Because I feel like the weight sometimes limits my movements which make my arms and shoulders stiff and sour. If their able to adjust the weight lighter that would def. be a game changer!!<3 a 1000/10 for me.

Thank you so much, MicaEzra! 💜 We love hearing how the BitWhip has helped bring even more creativity into your flow, especially with custom colors and the audio-reactive features. We also really appreciate the feedback about the RGB Critter BT’s weight. Comfort and freedom of movement are incredibly important for longer flow sessions, and feedback like this helps us think about where we can improve future designs. Sending lots of love to the flow community in the Philippines, and thank you for making AOAM part of your creative journey! ✨

Awesome Light Painting Effects
As a newb the effects I’m getting with it on camera are unique compared to what I was working with before getting the RGB Critter. I cannot wait to see what I can do with this after I learn all the features. Shipping did take awhile, but hey it's a small business and life happens.

Wonderful experience purchasing from Ants On A Melon and using all of the tools! I particularly love my RGB critter BT Flashlight. It's so helpful to be able to program your own color patterns! And it works so well with the Lumi tubes, fiber optic, and plexiglass tools from Ants on a Melon.

Critter BT: connection issues
Ever since I got the Critter BT, I've been having constant problems connecting it to my phone. Sometimes it connects, and when it does, it's an absolute joy to use. But most of the time, my phone simply doesn't detect the device, so I'm forced to rely on the buttons on the unit itself. It's really disappointing. I also have the 2.0 version, where I miss the clearer, more intuitive app interface. But with the newer version, the app often lets me down because of the connection issues. You've created an amazing unique tool, but because of this seemingly small issue, I can only use about 5% of its potential.
Response from Ants on a MelonJul 9, 2026
Hi Galina, Thank you for sharing your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the Bluetooth connection has been frustrating. We looked back at your previous support conversation and saw that resetting the battery helped get your Critter working again at the time, but it sounds like the app connection issue may still be happening. We have released app and firmware updates that addressed known Bluetooth connectivity issues, so we sent you an email with updated troubleshooting steps to help make sure your app and RGB Critter BT firmware are fully up to date. We’d still be happy to help troubleshoot this further and make sure you’re able to use the full potential of your RGB Critter BT. Please reply to our email or contact us through our support page so we can continue helping.
