I paid Woodbridge Publishers GBP 5,362…
I paid Woodbridge Publishers GBP 5,362 for ghostwriting, illustration, marketing and a podcast for my children's book. The book was finished about a year late, the print files failed Amazon KDP's checks, the prepaid marketing never started, and the company has still not paid GBP 2,862 of a refund it agreed in writing.
I signed the contract in March 2025. It promised delivery within 12 weeks. The illustrations were finished in June 2026, about a year after the agreed deadline. When the paperback was uploaded to Amazon KDP in July 2026, the interior was flagged for margin and ISBN errors, and the same errors came back after each attempted fix.
When I asked for the working files, I received 35 separate spread files with the text built into every illustration. There was no print layout, no spine or wraparound cover, and no copyright page carrying the ISBN. Not a single word of the book can be corrected from these files.
I also paid in full, in advance, for a three-month marketing package. In August 2026 the company confirmed in writing that work on it had not commenced.
After I sent a formal letter before action, the company refunded GBP 1,300 and agreed in writing to refund the remaining GBP 4,062 in a single payment by 30 September 2026. It then paid GBP 1,200. It has not paid the remaining GBP 2,862 and did not reply to my final demand, so I have issued a county court claim.
Payments were taken under three different names on the card statements: Appmi* Wdbrgpubuk, The Pro Website Design and Digital Tech LLC.
My advice to other authors: check which company you are actually contracting with, make the editable source files and a print-ready layout named deliverables in the contract, keep everything in writing, and do not pay for marketing in advance.
UPDATE · 10 October 2026
Woodbridge Publishers has replied to this review. The key facts are in writing.
The refund: in August 2026 the company wrote to me: "We confirm that we agree to your proposed payment arrangement. The outstanding refund balance of GBP 4,062 will be refunded to you in a single payment by 30 September 2026." It paid GBP 1,200 of that sum. Its reply now says the remaining GBP 2,862 will not be refunded.
The delay: the contract promised delivery within 12 weeks, by June 2025.The manuscript alone was only finalised on 25 August 2025. In April 2025 I was promised a timeline. It never arrived, and neither did the estimated delivery date promised in October 2025. My contact at the company changed several times during the project. I was never given a revised timeline, or told that any request of mine would move the delivery date.
The illustrations: the character design the company sent me in April 2025 was a Shar Pei, drawn from photos of my own dog. The cover style was discussed in August and September 2025 because the company sent me several options and asked me to choose. After a revised cover was promised on 18 September 2025, nothing arrived until 10 November 2025, although I chased on 2 and 18 October. The storyboard that arrived then showed a different breed of dog.
Approvals: approving draft artwork is not the same as receiving print-ready files. The files failed Amazon KDP's checks, and a printed proof showed the dog's face falling into the centre fold of the book.
The reply also discusses my pregnancy. I did not agree to that being published, and it does not change the contractual delivery date, which had already passed in June 2025.
The matter is now before the county court, and I will not comment further here.
Response from Woodbridge PublishersOct 9, 2026
Dear Sofia,
We appreciate you sharing your feedback and are writing to clarify the record regarding your project, the deliverables provided, and the status of your refund.
While we acknowledge that the marketing and podcast services did not commence as planned, we have already processed refunds totaling £2,500 to compensate you for those unstarted packages as agreed.
Regarding the remaining balance of £2,862, we must firmly clarify that this amount corresponds to the primary ghostwriting and illustration services contracted in early 2025. These funds have not been refunded because this core work was fully completed, approved, and delivered to you prior to your refund request.
We must also respectfully address the extended timeline of the project. The production process took over a year because, midway through the work, you requested a complete change to the illustration style, which required our team to overhaul and restart significant portions of the project. Furthermore, we adjusted our delivery schedule to accommodate your periods of unavailability due to your pregnancy and busy personal schedule. Throughout this entire extended period, our creative team continued to dedicate significant time and resources to your book, moving forward only after receiving your formal approvals at each milestone. Because these creative services were fully rendered and explicitly approved by you prior to completion, they do not qualify for a refund.
We understand you have experienced technical difficulties with the Amazon KDP formatting, margin requirements, and file layouts. While the creative content you paid for was completed as commissioned, we recognize the importance of a seamless publishing process. As a gesture of goodwill, we remain entirely willing to assist you with the specific print-ready layout corrections, spine adjustments, and ISBN placements required to ensure your approved book passes KDP's checks.
We respect your decision to pursue formal channels and will cooperate fully with the appropriate proceedings. However, our team remains available should you wish to let us resolve the technical formatting issues so you can successfully publish your book.
Sincerely,
The Management Team
