Don’t ever buy a WD NAS drive
Some of us chose our own personal cloud (from WD) as an alternative to other cloud solutions as it puts us in control of our data. Sadly, it seems this is an illusion as WD pull support for the OS your HDD runs on whenever they feel like, with the flimsiest of excuses. This renders your perfectly functional HDD useless with terabytes of data stuck on it. Moreover, they mock long-term customers with a measly discount on a new NAS that they will just depreciate in a few years again (2022 will be their second culling I think). After being fobbed off by their support team (when they eventually decided to reply) I can only conclude that WD My Cloud is bordering false advertising by selling a “cloud solution in your control” with forced obsolescence baked into their business model. As HDDs go I’ve found them to be very good. However, the mobile app they ship with the HDD lags a few years behind current app standards if they ever even bother to update it. In conclusion WD’s greed in the NAS department have left me never buying a WD product again and recommending the same to anyone who will listen to me!
