Disappointing durability: Basketball shoe suffered major structural failure within 6 months
UPDATE – October 13 2026: Following this review, Way of Wade responded publicly stating that my point about “warranty periods versus reasonable product lifespan is a fair one” and asked me to contact customer service with my order number so they could review the case again. I did exactly that, believing the company was genuinely reopening the matter based on the durability concerns and the additional information about how the shoes were used. Their response was to again decline any replacement or refund because the shoes were outside the 60-day warranty period. The only additional resolution offered was a $10 coupon toward a future purchase. I declined the coupon. Unfortunately, this leaves my original concern unresolved. September 29 2026 We purchased a pair of Way of Wade performance basketball shoes directly from the company. Based on our experience, I am disappointed with the durability and longevity of the shoes. Within six months after delivery, one shoe suffered a major structural failure in the middle of a basketball game. The upper ripped open and separated extensively from the lower structure, leaving a substantial amount of the foam-like internal construction exposed. This was not simply cosmetic wear, the shoe was no longer usable. What makes the durability particularly disappointing is that these were not my son's only or primary basketball shoes. He rotated them with two other pairs, so they were used for only a portion of his basketball activity during those six months. Based on that level of use, I would have expected a performance basketball shoe to last considerably longer. I contacted Way of Wade, provided photographs of the damage and our original order information, and requested a replacement. In their initial response, they apologized and stated: “We have reported this issue to our factory to improve this situation in future production.” Despite this, they declined to replace the shoes because their warranty is limited to 60 days. Given the extent of the failure and the fact that it occurred during a game, I asked them to escalate the matter as a product quality, durability and safety concern. Following another review, they again declined to provide either a replacement or refund. In their final response, Way of Wade said basketball shoe lifespan can vary depending on factors such as frequency of use, playing style, court surface and intensity of activity. However, they never asked me about any of those factors before reaching their decision. Had they asked about frequency of use, they would have learned that this pair was part of a three-pair rotation, used only in indoor courts and was not his primary basketball shoe. I understand that companies have warranty periods, but a warranty period and the reasonable lifespan of a product are not the same thing. Based on our experience, I do not consider approximately six months with the shoes being rotated with two other pairs to be satisfactory durability for a performance basketball shoe, particularly when the end result was such a significant structural failure. I contacted Way of Wade directly, provided evidence of the failure and gave them the opportunity to reconsider through an escalation before posting this review. For us, the biggest issue is durability. These shoes simply did not last as long as reasonably expected them to. Prospective buyers should also be aware of this when considering the expected longevity of the shoes.
