Incident Report incompetent dog Walker
Incident Report Wag Walker Dog Attack When incident occurred: On the evening of July 30th 2019 between the times of 8:30 PM and 9:05 PM. Where incident occurred: 136st outside of local bodega. Owners of attacked dog: Ebonie L, Stefani J, Kori T Detailed account of what happened: Around 8:30 PM on W 136st in Harlem New York our dog Koda was tethered to his usual spot by a scaffolding, close to the street away from foot traffic. As we were in the store I check on Koda regularly to make sure no one is messing with him or trying to take him. To my surprise, on looking outside of the deli window to check on him, I witnessed a dog and who I assumed at the time was his owner very close to my dog. The walker of the dog had allowed the dog to meet face to face with my unsupervised dog. Upon seeing this and reading the body language of the dogs I immediately acted, but I was not fast enough; as I reached the handle of the door to witness the walkers dog place his head on the shoulder of my dog (dominant behavior), both dogs reacted and it lead to a fight between my dog and this random dog walker’s dog. Upon seeing the fight start I rushed outside and immediately did what I had to do to separate the two dogs safely. I separated the dogs by myself while (who I mistook to be the owner) or walker of the dog did nothing but stand there shocked and frozen. She then refused to move the dog away after the fight and let both dogs very close to each other yet again. After separating the dogs the walker then fled the scene giving no information. Stefani then had to rundown the Walker several blocks catching her at 137th and Adam clayton Powell Jr Blvd. In trying to get information from her the walker attempted several times to place the dog as a barrier to attack Stefani. Unbeknownst to the walker we all work with dogs, especially many of the dogs locally so Stefani knew how to handle the dog at this moment . She restrained the dog by grabbing the leash and correcting the behavior with simple voice commands. Handing the now calm dog back to the walker she engaged in trying to get information from her. Stefani was then informed that this was not the owner of the dog, this was a WAG Walker named Sophie who was hired to walk the dog . On giving up the information Sophie stated that “ this is not my dog, I am just a wag walker", she then passed Stefani her phone so she could look in to the app to get the owners information such as the address and name of the Walker, dogs name and owner address . Disclosure : I can not stress the following information enough. I do not blame Jax (dog who attacked) for his actions. The dog was placed in a position where he was made uncomfortable , meeting a strange dog who was tied up and unsupervised is often times very hectic and stressful for dogs who have never met. I am aware of Wags policy since I at one point was going to work for them. In the questionnaire to be hired it is asked what to do if you see a dog (supervised or otherwise) on the street while walking. Wag walkers are instructed to not let any dogs in their care meet dogs they do not know without owner permission. The Walker is at fault here. It is also policy to inform Wag management immediately after any incidents occur (like the fight). Sophie failed protocol once again as she chose to flee the scene instead of stay and exchange information. I do not blame the dog for this situation and do not want any repercussions on the dog besides training classes for him. My professional background is 15 years caring for rescue dogs, to working with protection and military dogs. I have studied K9 behavior for years and worked with many of the local dogs in training and sporting. My knowledge and experience of these dogs and the situation helped mitigate the severity of what could of happened. One or both dogs could have been killed or seriously injured and while my dog was tethered in short leash so he could barely defend himself, if I was a second later then our outcome would’ve been completely different.
