I was in recovery once this year at The Recovery Village in Columbus Ohio. It went ok I had a relapse so I returned. I thought it was a place that cared and was trying to help people. But found out they care for nothing but money. I was not even threw detox when they found out my insurance would not cover it they asked me to leave immediately. They gave me no after care plan. This stay was chaotic it was understaffed. Most of staff was friendly but did not have a clue what was going on. To find out all this place does is scam insurance.
extremely dissatisfied patient.

Rehab profiteers. Pretty gross.
This place might be great for people with money who don't want to interact with the hoi polloi.
Poor need not apply.
This doesn't necessarily mean that this place is bad, but it's definitely not in the biz of helping people.
They want your money. The end.

Worst rehab experience of my life
I've never been the type to write reviews although my horrible experience here has compelled me to.
I called admissions trying to go to the Recovery Village in either Colorado or Orlando Florida. When I was approved; the admission team told me I was covered 100% only if I went to the Columbus Ohio location. I live in Texas so I really did not want to go to this location because it makes no sense. They told me I had 48 hours to get on a plane or I wouldn't be covered by the single term lease agreement my insurance offered and even tho I pleaded to go to the Orlando location (because I have a friend who lives there) they insisted they had "the best treatment plan" in Ohio and refused to let me go anywhere else.
I unfortunately made the mistake to take their word for it. Upon arriving the nurse checked in my prescription meds (I'm prescribed 4mgs xanax a day) when signing the nurse did NOT inform me these medications would be destroyed. When I left the facility because it was so terrible during detox they refused to give my meds back and insisted I was informed it would be destroyed despite the fact I was not. When I explained how dangerous my withdrawals could be and that I could have a seizure, as I was leaving, they went back in and check if I could have it "with the doctor" and then refused again. Suspicious that they did this considering the fact that they said "they destroyed them" I've been to another treatment place that did not destroy my prescription so I do not see why the insisted to do this and now worry I will have a seizure or painful withdrawals.
I was here for four days. It used to be a old persons care home so it's a horribly boring building that looks like an office. There was only 8 other patients there (even tho it could house around 70), because the place is that terrible. And during the four days I was there, 2 people discharged bc they hated it.
Almost all of the other very few patients there told me they hated being there, and two people told me they wanted to go to Colorado too and were pushed into going here because of the same "better treatment plan" lie. It's very obvious they are just trying to fill space at this facility because it's so empty and it's their worst location.
When I wanted to discharge I had to talk to staff for four hours of them saying I shouldn't leave and pretending they were not doing that. They all used rude tones of voices, all condescending and saying I would relapse, and the person who was assigned to be my therapist even accused me of just wanting to use heroin and that I didn't want treatment because "they didn't have a pool or other amenities promised at the other location " yes, if I'm told there are going to be nice things somewhere and there isn't, of course I'm going to be mad.
You get 3 15 mins calls a week. That's it. My roommate said she'd been there 24 days and didn't leave the building once. Group therapy was a joke, the guy just read stuff off a paper.
Oh and they didn't tell me that every hygiene product or make up must be new or you can't have it. So I didn't get to use any of my stuff.
Also they constantly search your room; flip your mattress and dig through your stuff.
I've been to places that let you have a lot more call times, that don't have an admission team that LIES about amenities. This company just wants your money! They do not care about your interests. Go somewhere else that's more relaxed and actually has something to do. My last rehab was heaven compared to this place. Would not recommend to anyone.

This was the worst experience of my …
This was the worst experience of my life.
1. The place is filthy. When it rains the downstairs floods and the mold is terrible. They say “luxury” accommodations, but it really is just an old motel. When I was there, there were 3 people in many of the rooms. I had a private room and they kept asking me to accept a roommate.
2. They do not offer the programs that they rave about on the phone. There is no equine experience. No pool (they even took away my bathing suit when I got there!). They informed me that I didn’t have to do AA and that the “smart program “ was available. Well, they shove AA down your throat. When we wanted to have a Smart Program meeting it was like pulling teeth to get the guide. I am a woman in my sixties and I was assured that there were many people close to my age there. Not true, most of the population are teens and 20’s.
3. They have little medical knowledge on treating certain addictions. I came in with an addiction of Klonopin and Ambien. They cold turkeyed me and I was dizzy and disoriented for months. I was given a dosage of Gabapentin that is far below the recommended dosage.
4. The food is inedible. We were served canned vegetables, boiled down to much and mystery meat. I wouldn’t serve their food to my dog. I spoke to the nutritionist twice. He finally admitted to me that he was bound up by a budget and there wasn’t much he could do.
5. Counseling services 😱. I only saw my counselor 2 Times outside of group. During group each morning one young man took over all of the time. Waste of all of our time.
6. The doctors threaten you when you don’t agree with them.
I left after 2 weeks. I rehabbed by myself, at home. It was the hardest thing to do, but their environment was not working for me. I am angry that this place still exists and is taking money from people. Actually, most of the younger people were court ordered, so I guess that is working for them.
7. I was private pay, up front. After I left in the middle of the program we expected to be reimbursed for the remainder of the time. Not according to them! It took my husband 5 months of writing numerous disputes to our credit card company to receive our refund.

LIES, LIES, LIES
I found The Recovery Village when searching for the best rehab in the US. I had been to rehab before locally, but was finally in a position where I could choose from any rehab (almost) in the country. After researching then talking to "The Recovery Village" (In quotes because I wasn't speaking with them, but a sales-based call center I later found out), I decided this was where I wanted to go because I was told I would be treated with dignity, as an adult and be with others comparable in age and addiction.
I booked my flight to Florida (I'm in Michigan) and flew down in late September 2016. I was picked up from the airport and 'checked in', which is a typical question and answer session followed by a strip search. Your suitcases are gone through thoroughly as was my purse and items they deemed to be a possible 'vehicle for alcohol or drugs' were seized. They took my conditioner, hair spray, body spray and styling mousse. I was left using their generic conditioner, that is, when the dispenser was finally repaired and filled. There is no consistency in the items they seize, other ‘clients’ (treated more like patients in an adolescent psych ward) were able to keep items deemed contraband. They also took all of my jewelry, Amazon Echo and cell phone.
I was told I’d be able to smoke whenever I want, but in Detox they take your cigarettes and give them to you one at a time each hour. Some hours you’re allowed to smoke two, but there are hours you can’t go outside to the small enclosed smoking area and/or smoke and you’re not allowed go out after 9 pm unless the staff on duty let you go out one last time around 10 pm. People steal cigarettes when no one is at the desk (they are kept in a Tupperware container with your name on the pack) and you’re not supposed to be allowed to give others a cigarette. I actually brought a carton of Camels that can either be menthol or non-menthol (you squeeze a little pod in the filter and it releases menthol) to give to people that didn’t have cigarettes and they gave me a VERY hard time about it. When I started going to “residential” classes and meals, they made me give them away all at one time.
The food is FAR from 5-star, there were meals that were so over-seasoned that it was absolutely inedible and I’m not a picky eater. In choosing my meals, I went with the healthy option (you are offered a regular meal or healthy choice) and the food was so-so. They won’t volunteer this information, but in the handguide it says you are able to request chicken breast instead of the meal on the menu and you’re allowed to request a sandwich throughout the day, but no one knew this, I found out the day before I left. When I did order it, they were cold and over-cooked. The salads are the best option. Oh, they also give you a snack, such as a granola bar or bag of nuts, but then seize them in “goodie raids”. Yes, the actually go through all the rooms looking for a confiscating snacks that they give you!!! Nevermind looking for drugs, they want the snacks. God forbid you save a cookie from dinner for later, you get in trouble for that.
Attending the classes, what you are really there for, is only enforced for a few. If they like you, you can get away with skipping them, the AA meeting (which isn’t a meeting, it’s a speaker every night) and the evening “wrap-up” which is where they go around to all 80+ clients and see if they met their goals for the day. It’s also the time people ‘graduate’ and their friends all give them a send-off. I was at wrap-ups that lasted over an hour and this is supposed to be your personal time to smoke, relax, socialize, etc. You also end up waiting upwards of 45 minutes in line to get your medications.
I am a 50-year old female alcoholic and was in with 90% males under 25 with most of the residents being young heroin addicts. I was PROMISED 1 hour a day one-on-one therapy with a licensed psychiatrist specializing in grief and depression. I received 2 hours a day group therapy, in which I wasn’t allowed to share because people that were there for 3 weeks and more were giving their life story. I had 2 meetings with my counselor, who didn’t like me because I’m outspoken and intelligent, the first was 40 minutes, the second was a half-hour and she diagnosed me as hype-something disorder and bipolar; the staff doctor (who I saw more than my personal counselor) diagnosed me as bipolar after meeting with me for a grand total of 2 hours in 9 days. These people are either very good or very corrupt, as you cannot give an accurate mental illness diagnosis until someone is sober for 6 months and you see them at least 3 times a week.
When I decided to not spend the 2 weeks I had arranged, I was informed that I would be leaving AMA (against medical advice) and learned that even if I had stayed the full 2 weeks, I would still be under this classification. This means you’re on your own when it comes to a plane ticket home and a ride to the airport. They escort you to your room, give you your suitcases (which they’ve rifled through and repacked with no rhyme or reason), give you 15 minutes to pack and kick you out the door. You’re not allowed to talk to your roommates or friends you’ve made; you are hurried out like they caught you shooting up in the bathroom. I demanded to be treated with respect and dignity and was lucky enough to get a ride to the airport.
I had my husband arranging a plane ticket for me that Sunday, but thank God I stopped him as he was clicking “purchase” of a $400 plane ticket. They let me call him from the counselor’s office (not mine, but a nice one I had met with at intake who heard me say that they promised I could come for just 2 weeks) because they don’t do outtake on Sundays. I would’ve been on the streets with my luggage and no place to stay or go but the airport. A taxi would’ve cost over $100. He purchased me a ticket for Monday afternoon but wasn’t able to get the flight information to me because the contact number he had kept going to voicemail (on a Monday morning and afternoon during business hours). He was LITERALLY ready to call the police for holding me against my will. When I did finally get the flight information – 3 hours before the flight – I had barely enough time to pack and get into the vehicle to be shuttled off. When going through the security check, I lost my conditioner, body wash, etc. because they packed them in my carry-on and I didn’t have time to repack anything. My purse was a mess, thankfully my driver’s license was where it belonged!
I could go on and on about how you’re treated like an adolescent, only allowed an hour and a half a day to use the amenities such as the pool or massage (which is not included), how the staff talks down to you, how the mental health care is a joke, how they play favorites, etc. but I think the information I’ve provided should be enough for you to get the idea that this ISN’T where you want to go for recovery! I am still looking for a lawyer, as 8 other people want to start a class action lawsuit.
