One star is the lowest I can give. I am currently searching for another insurer at present. These people are , well, I can't say. But steer clear of Hartford. You'll be glad you did.
And if you don't, it will only take one encounter to clarify what I mean.

I had two vehicles insured by them and…
I had two vehicles insured by them and canceled the policy. I kept getting bills from Hartford so I sent a declaration from my new insurance. I am still receiving bills which is frustrating

Stay away from Hartford Insurance
Unfortunately, I am not able to give zero (0) stars.
On April 27, 2025, I switched insurance companies due to a significant rate increase. I have no accidents or points on my driver's license, and I use my vehicle for pleasure. While shopping for insurance, I saw an advertisement for Hartford through AARP. I had to join AARP to purchase Hartford insurance through them. I completed the lengthy application and the Statement of Residency for New Jersey. I paid my policy in full. On April 26, I received an email, “Welcome To The Hartford. Thank you for choosing The Hartford. You can relax knowing you’re protected by a company that’s been trusted for more than 200 years.”
On April 26, I received an email from Hartford advising me to e-sign to finalize my auto policy by April 28, or a paper copy would be mailed. I made changes to the policy and e-signed it late in the evening on April 28. On April 29, at 1:52 a.m., I received another email, “Voided: Please Sign to Finalize Your Auto Policy.” This email stated I could not e-sign my documents and needed to send in the paper copies. Since I e-signed late in the evening on April 28, I thought my documents had not been posted yet. On April 30, I received an email stating that the Pre-Insurance Inspection had been completed. After receiving the report, I called Hartford because the report did not accurately reflect certain features of my vehicle. The representative did not mention that the required documents had not been returned.
I never received any further email or letter from Hartford about these documents until June 16, 2025, when they informed me they were canceling my policy. The written reason was “failure to return the required application and New Jersey Statement of Residency form.” I called and spoke with Lance. He said that I did not return the signed Statement of Residency form and that the State of NJ requires it, not Hartford. I have spoken to several insurance companies, and none have heard of this form. I sent emails to different Hartford addresses and the Doc U Sign address with the signed paperwork, but I did not get a response. On June 20, I sent the documents via certified and regular mail. On June 27, I called and spoke with Jasmine. She kept circling around and told me that the emails I received from Hartford were not from Hartford. What? It is now June 30, and I haven't received the certified letter. Jasmine also denied that the letter was received by regular mail. I am going to the Post Office to resend the letters.

I am Insured with the Hartford they are Price Gouging
I have been Insured with the Hartford for 2 years now. When I first came over to them, they were great. Then the first renewal came up and they raised my rate over $1200.00 a year, I complained, and they wanted to remove coverages to lower my rate. I told them no and compared my policy with others in my area and they were definitely higher. but I stayed with them for another year. Renewal is up again, and it went up another $1200.00 a year. So, in 2 years my auto insurance has double with them. My wife and I have clean driving records and no accidents. They want over $5000.00 a year. We have a 2023 Chrysler 300 and a 2020 Jeep Cherokee both these vehicles are pleasure vehicles and very low mileage. Wife works at home, I ride my Harley to Work, the Hartford doesn't cover motorcycles anyway. They are price gouging. There is absolutely no reason for the increase. Their answer is to remove coverages; my answer is to remove The Hartford! They want me to make payments to them with very little to no coverage. I may be old but not stupid! Moving over to Mercury which is $228.00 a month instead of the Hartford at $443.00 a month! Don't let them suck you in, and the start hitting you with their rate increases. I went ahead and cancelled AARP also. I am going to drop reviews everywhere! I want to save others from this!

Bait and switch
I do NOT recommend this company. Their acquisition process is not transparent, I believe it is intentionally slow, and purposely overly complicated. I apparently was still in the "application" process 17+ days after getting a quote for car insurance that was acceptable to me. The quote supported their claim that they can save me $$. After receiving the quote and monthly payment schedule they were happy to accept my first month's payment of $271.48. I mean, money was exchanged right? I had every reason to believe my business with Hartford was a go. No mention at all of driving record at that time which I thought was odd but oh well, they have access to gigantic databases and I figured my record had been reviewed. Otherwise, why would they give me a quote and take my money? 13 days later I received written materials in the MAIL with a 4 day turnaround asking whether I had any moving violations or accidents in the last 5 years. I got a ticket but couldn't remember the date. Thought it was maybe 2022 or 2023 so wrote that down and sent the stuff off so it would reach them by 6/22 as requested. On 6/23/25, 12 hours into my "supposed" new insurance policy beginning and my old one cancelling, I get a phone call and email stating that due to the 1 moving violation my premium is now going up. I call them and found out it is going up by $1100! So now my premium exceeds any savings they quoted AND what my original insurance company was charging. I asked why this was just coming up now 17+ days later and got a weak excuse that "it can take up to 7 days to receive DMV info from California." Sorry - I'm not biting. I started the process with them 6/5/2025 and insurance was due to start 6/22/25. I'm having a hard time believing in this day and age getting settled into a new auto policy takes 17+ days. I think they do this on purpose because when they spring the higher premium on you at the last minute, the odds favor them that most people will just go ahead and acquiesce out of fear they aren't covered. Besides these shady business practices, the promised gift they use to lure you in never materializes. I cancelled and went back to my previous insurer. Reinstated with them on the spot btw....none of Hartford's extortionist greedy delay tactics. Update: I was credited back most of the money minus 24.52. No explanation as to why the amounts don't match but again, I suspect most people won't squawk.

Oh I should have known better ..
Oh I should have known better ... I was going to be a day late on my payment and notified them of it. It was a government check snafu. They refused to accept it and said they would cancel me for being late. They didn't, greedy pukes took my money. Now fighting them on account stuff, these are just nasty people all the way around. I'll be cancelling bright and early next business day of this post. Good riddance!

I wanted to be their client
I wanted to be their client. I signed up for a small business insurance with Travelers last year... This year my contract was transferred to The Hartford. I do not know why this happened. But I assumed my automatic payments were going through. Little did I know... THEY WERE NOT. At this point I'm about 2-3 months behind on payments I thought were being paid. You think you would get a call explaining the situation.
NOPE. I discovered my policy was cancelled by accidentally finding an email explaining so.
When I called and asked their rep "why did no one call to explain?", he said "we don't do phone calls. We communicate via email and you have our website to log into.
(CURSE WORD-Use your imagination)
How often do you think I'm going to log into your website? How often do you think I'll be looking for your emails? This is an insurance deal. PAY AND FORGET IT. This is how it works. This isn't some subscription into some entertainment site. I have no intention to log in to your website... EVER. But if someone had called and explained I need to in order to set up a payment process, I would have considered it.
They should have done their due diligence to CONTACT their clients to inform them of any existing issues, like payment processing. WTF?!
An email DOES NOT CUT IT!
So when dude told me this, I was like... "this is how you treat your clients? You can just leave that policy cancelled. I will be searching else where."

Steer clear of Heartless Hartford
Steer clear of these dirtbags. They cancelled my mother in laws HO insurance while she was in a coma and then REFUSED to assist my wife with keeping the account current.
