Sterling was unable to locate any of my employment history, and requested that I submit the information to them in the form of pay stubs or tax forms. The tax forms didn't have the full companies name so they declined it and requested I submit a pay stub from 4 years ago. We live in the electronic age. People only get like one or two pay stubs before getting direct deposits. And even then, who keeps a 4 year old stub? All the while, I am waiting for them to complete their dog and pony show so I can get a job. Their incompetence is making me look bad to a potential employer.

This place is a joke! I love this company I do HEDIS projects with and they sent my info over to the agency they are using to process their contract hires. Well, I am a rehire not new hire with agency but the mess they are putting through is annoying. One of my headaches is Sterling who had the audacity to say the could not verify a job I worked at over 6 years and it is a GOVERNMENT agency. Out of all jobs, they cannot verify this one? I will not turn over my W2s or IRS transcripts for a contract job first of all and a place I workes through prior post leaving that governement role. The agency's client recruited me not the agency, it' so annoying. I did provide the easily found number to verify State of Ohio employee employment to the agency and Sterling as I will not participate in thier highly invasive intrusion on my life. I don't need to provide my income statements for them to find out if I worked somewhere. Weird!

The customer service advisor I spoke with was very thorough.

They are incredibly slow at doing background checks. They give up at the first hurdle and don't contact the references actually provided by the candidate. They are slow to reply to emails and don't read them properly, so you get your time wasted for week. Will be looking for another back ground check provider.

Read the one-star reviews here, they are the real deal. After the experience of myself and colleagues I could not believe the overall high rating Sterling has so I looked more closely and this site is flooded by obviously fake 5 star reviews. Do not fall for this, Sterling is utterly incompetent and awful to deal with. If I were able to give them negative stars I would. My employer was acquired by another company and we all had to submit to a background check which was handled by Sterling. They first had us fill out a detailed form with our education background and past 7 years of employment which we did, then the emails from Sterling saying they could not verify the information and asking us to do all of their work for them and send them years of W2's (DON'T DO THIS!) to prove we had worked for these companies. They even contacted my high school and when the school had no record of me they told me I needed send them a copy of my diploma. Now mind you I graduated more than 20 years ago so it is no surprise the school administrators didn't remember me but I sent them the diploma to humor them and then 2 days later they again emailed me asking me to send them my diploma. My colleagues were reporting similar experience and finally after reaching out to the HR representative we were told to just ignore their emails. Sterling is straight up fraud, they make only the most trivial effort to contact anyone at your former employers and schools and when that doesn't work they immediately demand that you do their job for them and prove your background information yourself.
