Regarding the $112,000 hold on the…
Regarding the $112,000 hold on the $130,000 collected on our behalf, there has been a recent development. Three weeks ago, someone contacted me for verification and froze my account. A response on Trustpilot stated, "Hi Mahmoud, thank you for sharing your feedback. Our team has emailed you about your account and royalty status. Please refer to your email for details."
However, the royalties are still on hold. We have taken legal action against them and have provided Songtrust with the necessary court documentation. I advise others to steer clear of this company as they have failed to release payments, provide adequate customer support, and appear to be a subsidiary of Downtown created to take advantage of independent songwriters.
We will continue to post here until you return the money you took.

As an artist or rights holder based in Nigeria
As an artist or rights holder based outside the USA, dealing with music royalties can be a complex process, especially when it comes to international administration. Unfortunately, my experience with Songtrust has brought to light some troubling issues regarding their handling of royalties earned in US dollars.
Songtrust, a prominent music royalty administration service, is supposed to streamline the process of collecting and distributing royalties worldwide. However, my experience has revealed a significant shortcoming in their approach, particularly concerning the treatment of royalties earned in US dollars.
Despite providing Songtrust with detailed domiciliary bank account information for the direct receipt of royalties earned in US dollars, the company has repeatedly disregarded this instruction. Instead, they have converted the earnings into local currencies before sending them out. This not only goes against the explicit request made but also results in the collection of their tax percentage in US dollars. Consequently, this practice has led to a noticeable shortfall in the royalties I’ve received, impacting my earnings negatively.
Such handling of royalties is both frustrating and unfair. When working with an international service, it is reasonable to expect that they would respect the specifics of how you wish your royalties to be managed and distributed. Songtrust's failure to adhere to these instructions not only disrupts the financial expectations of their clients but also raises concerns about their commitment to fair and transparent practices.
The conversion of earnings into local currencies, coupled with the tax collection in US dollars, seems to be an oversight or possibly a systemic flaw in Songtrust’s processes. This situation feels like an act of negligence or, at the very least, a serious mismanagement of international royalties. The short payment of royalties due to these issues is not just a minor inconvenience; it affects the financial stability and trust that rights holders place in Songtrust.
In summary, while Songtrust presents itself as a solution for global music royalty distribution, its handling of international royalties, particularly for clients outside the USA, needs substantial improvement. The disregard for specific instructions regarding currency handling and the resultant short payments in royalties suggest a need for more careful and client-focused management. As it stands, Songtrust’s approach appears both unfair and problematic, warranting serious reconsideration for those who depend on accurate and respectful administration of their earned royalties.

Paul - thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We sincerely apologize for the difficulties you've faced regarding the management of your royalties, particularly in relation to currency conversion and the processing of your instructions.
We acknowledge the frustration caused by the conversion of your earnings and the impact it has had on your financial expectations. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mandates that employers or payers (Tax Withholding Agents) withhold a portion of payments made to non-U.S. citizens or non-residents performing services within the U.S. Known as non-resident alien (NRA) withholding, this amount is remitted to the IRS, to be applied towards the payee’s annual income tax obligation.
At Songtrust, we aim to provide a seamless experience for artists and rights holders worldwide. We understand that handling international royalties can be complex, and we appreciate your feedback as it highlights areas where we can improve.

Hi Diego! Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify any confusion regarding your payment. As communicated in our emails with you, the difference in the amount you received is due to the additional 5% fee applied for early payment. Terrible for independent artist
Customer service is non existent. You will never get any reply or help for questions.
I got super lucky pushing some of my songs through because I messaged a MILLION people who worked at songtrust lol. Other than that, it’s been a year and about half my catalog (20+) songs where I am the SOLE creator, are still “processing and verifying”. Ridiculous.
Very frustrating company
Response from SongtrustOct 25, 2024
Thank you for sharing your experience, Angel. I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve had a frustrating time with our service, especially as an independent artist. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when you’re not getting the support you need.
We truly value your music and the hard work that goes into creating it. The processing delays and lack of communication you’ve experienced are not what we aim for, and I can see how that would be incredibly disheartening. Your feedback is important to us; I’ve gone ahead and shared this with our team. Please reach out to Support if you have any questions or concerns about your registrations and we will look into this further for you.

Contract terminated 4 years ago and still collects
I had terminated my agreement with Songtrust at 20th of January, 2021, after they have failed to properly collect my royalties worldwide. I recieved a Letter of Reqlinquishment from Makenna at Songtrust, and I was told that about 1 year after termination, the royalties will stop to come to Songtrust, which is what I wanted. However we're now almost 4 years after termination, and Songtrust still recieves royalties on my behalf. I sent them a Letter of Direction too to that my new publisher will recieve all royalties, but they don't respond to any of my support tickets or emails. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a respond to get a hold of anyone at this failing company.
I would highly recommand to stay away from Songtrust as they are incapable on delivering full royalties collection, and then when you wish to cut ties, It seems impossible.
Please stop collecting my royalties and transfer every single cent that you earn to my new publisher.
Response from SongtrustOct 25, 2024
Hi Timor, Thanks for sharing your feedback and I'm sorry to hear about your experience with us. As we mention in our cancellation confirmation communication, we do not proactively relinquish works. It is up to your new publisher to update those songs in question. Until then, societies will continue to pay the most recently updated publisher for those works and so if we receive the money from the society for your claims, we still process the royalties and pay them out to you even though you are cancelled. The money has to have somewhere to go if it is due to you and so we accept it if we are still listed on your behalf. We offer different options and will happily work with your new publisher to transfer any money that is due to your new deal, but we do not do this until it is requested of us with a proper LOD from your publisher. I understand our Support team is now in contact with you to handle this transfer, so hope we can resolve this fully for you!

$112,280 of unpaid royalties
As a sub-publisher, we would like to bring to your attention that Songtrust has not been paying our royalties since 2021. Currently, they owe us more than $112,280.39 in unpaid royalties along with interest. Despite our attempts, they have not responded to any of our emails, and it seems that they are unlawfully withholding our funds. Furthermore, they have failed to remove the works from PRO or provide any relinquishment letters. It is unacceptable for them to continue collecting on our behalf while disregarding the payment of due royalties. Please be cautious of engaging with Songtrust as they have been unresponsive and negligent.
Response from SongtrustAug 29, 2024
Hi Olivia and thank you for sharing your feedback. Our team has emailed you about your account and royalty status. Please refer to your email for details.
