A-to-z Guarantee Failure: Shifts $500+ Return Cost for Damaged Auto Part
I purchased a replacement rear bumper cover on Amazon from third-party seller WLSupply for $378.77. The listing did not disclose several important details. The bumper arrived folded/compressed inside a smaller box, and my professional body shop would not install it in the condition received. The listing also stated that the bumper was inspected for mounting alignment and surface finish, yet the shipping method that could affect that condition was not disclosed. I also documented a major discrepancy in the shipping information. The listing showed an approximately 165 lb shipping weight, while the package actually delivered was approximately 20 lbs. When I requested a return, I learned that I would be expected to pay oversized return freight upfront. Retail return quotes to the seller’s Crosby, Texas return address exceeded $500, more than the $378.77 purchase price. None of that return-cost burden was disclosed before purchase. I repeatedly asked for a prepaid return method or seller-arranged pickup. Amazon customer service previously instructed the seller to arrange return transportation, but that did not happen. After multiple contacts and escalations, Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee team ultimately instructed me to pay the return freight upfront, return the item, and then submit the shipping receipt to seek reimbursement afterward. I have been an Amazon Prime customer for more than 10 years, and I have never had to pay out of pocket to return an item. That reliable return experience is one of the reasons I have continued shopping with Amazon and why I generally avoid marketplaces where buyers may be responsible for costly return shipping. My concern is simple: a customer should not have to advance more than the value of the product just to return an item because of the condition in which it arrived, especially when the packaging method, shipping information, and return-freight burden were not clearly disclosed before purchase. I am requesting either a full refund of $378.77 or prepaid/seller-arranged return transportation.
