I recently did a focus group with SIS International Research. This might sound strange, but it was really fun. The topic itself was serious, and one that has potential impact outside of our small group. I left feeling like a group of 10 (I think) strangers could spend 2 hours in a room, be presented with a complex topic, and spend that 2 hours engaged in lively, intelligent, and respectful conversation. Focus groups don't run themselves, and I would imagine it can be like herding cats. It helped that we were given great directions, vouchers for parking, snacks and drinks. The group was in Boston, and although I live relatively close, the above eased the frustration of navigating and parking in Boston. Sometimes it's the little things... From this experience, I am confident in stating that SIS itself organizes their focus groups in a thoughtful, focused manner. Again, this might sound strange, but the experience made me hopeful that as Margaret Mead said (and I probably misquote) don't underestimate the power of a small group to affect change. Thanks, SIS!
