DO NOT SIGN UP
Like the other negative reviews, you will notice the common denominator are those members that actually tried to use Sidecar for a medical emergency. For regular basic medical needs this service works well. I signed up for the "premium plan" with $2,000,000 of annual benefit so I would be covered for medical emergencies or life threatening situations aka cancer. Unfortunately, I broke my ankle. My out of pocket costs from Sidecar was going to be over $30k. This is while my remaining annual benefit was showing $1,997,700. In other words, the large annual benefit is simply a marketing ploy by Sidecar- you'll never be able to use that. Also it is extremely difficult to try and get doctor's offices to list a million medical codes on an invoice so Sidecar will reimburse you appropriately. I am lucky that I discovered Sidecar is a scam right before I was due for renewal so I was able to end my Sidecar coverage and find an insurance plan that actually covers medical emergencies with a max out of pocket for not that much more in monthly premium! If you were looking into Sidecar to be covered for medical emergencies like I was, please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
Response from Sidecar HealthJan 25, 2022
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing your feedback with us. For a $2 million Coverage plan, we cover all medically necessary services, tests and drugs up to $2 million - no more, no less. Our coverage amounts for any service (or test, or drug) is called the "Benefit Amount," and they are based on real market rates for "self pay" or "cash" patients (people who pay at the time of service - which a lot of doctors prefer). More than half of all Sidecar Health member transactions happen below the Benefit Amount (and these people actually get to keep the savings). We take pride in our members being able to find the Benefit Amount for whatever they need *before* getting care, so they can shop around (emergencies are different of course, and we have a specific process there). In your case, $30,000 seems excessive for a broken ankle, but it's hard to know without looking closely at the itemized invoice. We always advise members to call us, and we can generally help find great care options. Thanks for your feedback, and we hope you give us another try. A lot of Sidecar Health members really do prefer us to traditional plans.
