I scheduled my transport months in…
I scheduled my transport months in advance. I filled out the paperwork. They took forever to answer questions and then insisted that I, a single person NOT a business, obtain an EIN. When I tried to explain that I am a private citizen trying to ship my car, they insisted I obtain an EIN from the IRS. I am not a business. My SSN is my identification. It was a complete waste of time and they could have told me they were a shady business months ago!
Response from Puerto Rico Car TransportOct 6, 2026
We’re sorry for the frustration this caused. Unfortunately, federal regulations banned the use of Social Security Numbers in the Automated Export System due to privacy laws. To file the required Electronic Export Information for an export or a shipment to a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico, the system must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Because the IRS portal does not have a specific button labeled "Individual shipping a personal car," the U.S. government specifically instructs individuals to select Sole Proprietor and check "Started a new business" as a technical placeholder. Our representative did explain the EIN requirement to you and provided instructions on how to apply for one. We also want to stress that this is not a requirement created by Puerto Rico Car Transport. Our website also clearly states that an individual EIN is required for government filing purposes. We understand this may have been frustrating, but this is a requirement related to the government filing process and is not something our company has imposed on customers.
