If you take the expedition to Antarctica, make sure you go kayaking, it was without doubt the highlight of the trip. Also take the extra days to explore South Georgia. It is the wildest place on Earth. I get very bad seasickness, but we were lucky to get relatively calm seas and the doctor supplied me with plenty of Dramamine which did the trick. The only criticism I initially had of the trip is the amount of food waste. The buffet trays were kept unneccessarily full at all times. Although I am assured that waste is kept to a minimum and treated ethically and environmentally sensitively. Overall this was a wonderful trip.

Hi, Adrian, and thank you for your comments. We're glad you were able to get your seasickness under control, but we agree with you that those extra sea days getting you to South Georgia are well worthwhile. Regarding your comment about food waste: we asked our hotel director about this and here is her response: "Statistical data is used for food consumption projections, based on previous cruises and the destinations, along with the chef's own knowledge from his experience. That's one of the reasons he walks around the dining room, the carving station, etc. – to check on current consumption and guest preferences for one entree over another. According to his findings, menus and production are adjusted. When there is over-production of some food items, the crew get this added share. Leftovers are segregated. Food remnants go through a grinder to a fine mixture that is released in specific latitudes (not Antarctic waters!) in accordance with maritime rules and laws. Bones and chicken products are separated and off-loaded in Ushuaia to prevent any possible avian contamination in Antarctic waters. With the above and other procedures, food waste is kept to a minimum."

Our Poseidon trip to Antarctica We recently completed a trip on MV Sea Spirit to Antarctica. This trip was well organised and very safe. The crew were all competent and very knowledgeable. We were able to have two zodiac experiences each day, either landings or zodiac cruise amonst the ice floes. The information and feedback sessions were very informative. We were very fortunate having the grandson of Sir Robert Falcon Scott on board as one of the many knowledgeable zodiac drivers and polar experienced educators. So great to be able to see wildlife in the form of Weddell seals, Orcas, Penguins and elephant seals. A highlight was a barbeque lunch prepared by the competent chef Francis, on the back of the ship in the middle of Lemaire Channel. Some passengers went for a polar dip, and some went overnight camping in the ice. Clear instructions were given for donning the boots and jackets correctly, and for meeting biosecurity requirements in the cleaning of boots when getting on and off the ship onto Zodiacs. The captain had an open bridge policy so passengers could view possible animal and bird sightings. Cabins were warm and snug - we had snow on our window ledge outside! Ginger tea was very welcome to help the potential sea nausea when crossing the Drake passage. Would recommend this trip to anyone who has ever dreamed of visiting the Antarctic Peninsula.

From the booking process to departing the ship Poseidon Expeditions did everything flawlessly. Like a well oiled machine the expedition lived up to expectations and resulted in a wonderful experience.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen Christian Hoppe Marketing Director DACH and Central Europe Poseidon Expeditions GmbH

We had great weather, so no expeditions were cancelled, we even got an extra. One was not good because our zodiac driver was awful, stayed way behind the others, but we got an extra photo boat that was excellent as a make up. We were originally on OOE, and took Poseidon as an alternative when our cruise got cancelled. It is not my style to have sit down dinner on something like this. I would rather have buffet and I am OK with less on the hotel likeness of the rooms. And rather have the less rate than a free jacket. It was about 130 people, so it was relatively quick getting people on and off. OOE ioffe was about 100. You want a boat with about 100 +/- 20 people. And they told us there were about 130 passengers on the Sea Spirit. And since we were on labeled boats, so we took turns going first, the count was about right. And there were enough people saying they didn't want sit down. I think Europeans, Asians and Russians may like it. But Americans not so much. Just saying. Sea Spirit is an excellent boat. And I would probably take it if it went to the Canadian Arctic. But it doesn't.

Hi, Ren, and thanks for your comments. Sorry to hear that your trip on One Ocean Expeditions was canceled, and we were happy to be able to accommodate you. Regarding the food service, we offer buffets for both breakfast and lunch, but have found that our guests generally enjoy a relaxing sit-down meal service at the end of the day. Nice to be pampered a bit on occasion! The Sea Spirit carries 114 passengers tops, with a dozen of those generally off on a kayak excursion while the other 100 are ashore. OOE's Resolute carried up to 146, and the ship is considerably larger than the Sea Spirit. You are absolutely right about choosing a ship close to 100 guests, as only 100 are allowed onshore at any one landing site at one time in Antarctica. Just a follow-up note on the number of guests aboard the Sea Spirit: this vessel is permitted to carry no more than 127 guests, and that includes the 13 expedition staff that normally are on board. That leaves 114 berths for passengers.

I took the 08-JAN-2020 Antarctic Wildlife Adventure to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia & Antarctica. This was my second cruise with Poseidon within a month and I was just as satisfied with this cruise as I was the first one. While we did have some weather issues that shortened our time in the Falklands and South Georgia, the decision making process was explained and eminently sensible. This simply increased our time in Antarctica which I was happy with. South Georgia was amazing from a wildlife perspective. So much life! I would recommend cruising with Poseidon in a heartbeat. Hotel, Bridge and Engineering staff were great. The Expedition team were terrific for the most part. While they're is some variability in experience (on a zodiac fire example) between the team I was generally happy with all of them. I enjoyed having Lauren as expedition leader. Approachable, personable and competent. Per my last review, the only real complaint I have is the food. I just don't think it's good enough for the price being paid. It is not bad by any means...but neither is it good. It is however plentiful and there is variety. I am considering a third cruise with Poseidon in the near future.
