“Once in a Lifetime”
26.01.20-06.02.20 Antarktische Halbinsel

+++ ein Schiff zum Wohlfühlen

Antarctic Wildlife Adventure - 26Feb-19Mar2020
Antarctic Wildlife Adventure, Sea Spirit - Departed Ushuaia 26 Feb 2020
This was a wonderful experience with many, many positives, but there were some negatives also.
Positives included - Comfort of cabin, great food in range and quality, generally high quality expedition staff, great hospitality staff, the scope and content of lectures. The landings on islands of the Antarctic Peninsular and the single landing on the Antarctic Continent, The cruising around & landings on Sth Georgia Island and the amazing wildlife & scenery, there. The visit to Stanley, Falkland Islands.
Negatives included - The time spent at Falkland Islands was unfortunately cut short by at least 1/2 day and we missed out on a landing. The reason given by the crew - strong wind prevented ship leaving the harbour till it eased. I do not believe this was the true reason for one moment. I suspect the crew were starting to appreciate gravity of the Covid19 situation and wanted to reach the original disembarkation port (Montevideo) without delay. At sea after leaving the Falkland Islands, we were finally informed about the consequences of Covid19 - resulting in Montevideo closing its port to the ship. We were regularly updated on what was being done by Poseidon & the authorities in both Uruguay & Argentina. We spent over 2 days at anchor off the coast of Uruguay - this was not Poseidon's fault, but the highly restricted access passengers had (via a single shared laptop) to the internet to communicate with travel agents, family, to check alternative flights was frustrating and disappointing. For our final day aboard, we were given (text only) access to WhatApp on smart devices which was a great improvement, but albeit very belated. Thankfully the initial refusal to disembark Montevideo was reversed & we were able to disembark (1 day later than scheduled). On leaving the ship passengers were told almost nothing of what would happen next. We were taken by bus to a hotel and there quite abandoned by Poseidon. The staff at the hotel knew little and no officials came to brief passengers about the next steps. All passengers were left to their own devices. I accept everyone was facing an unprecedented situation, but I feel Poseidon should have done a lot, lot more to assist passengers, or at least ensure they were put in touch with appropriate resources that would help the passengers to their home country.
As a final comment, coming from a country where tipping for good service is not universal and is normally passed directly between the giver & receiver. I dislike the method of tipping adopted by Poseidon, whereby there is a suggested daily rate for Expedition Staff and another quite different daily rate (much higher) for Hospitality Staff, shared among each group. At the suggested rates for a 22 day cruise, the total amount is substantial for many passengers. I would much prefer Poseidon includes in the fares, ALL gratuities. Poseidon could elect to pay all their staff properly so they do not need tips to receive appropriate income. It also begs to the question what happens to the ship operational crew - they are just as important - do they get any gratuities? Perhaps not, based on the literature we got. Presumably the ship crew get paid properly.

Hi, Mark.
First, we want to thank you for your gracious comments about the staff, the food and the opportunities to explore the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and Stanley, capital of the Falklands. This means a lot to us and to the staff aboard the Sea Spirit. Your concerns and frustrations are understandable, and we would like to address some of those. We've double-checked you comments with the expedition leader and other Poseidon staff that were aboard your voyage, as we wanted to explain some of these issues as best we can.
Departing Falklands earlier than expected: Our plan was to spend a half-day in Stanley and depart by 7:00 pm, allowing us enough time for the 12-hour journey to West Point Island. The ship was cleared and ready to sail, but strong wind gusts over 30 knots made it impossible to get away from the dock on time. The line handlers, nice guys they are, waited in their cars, hoping they could do their job and be on their way home. They finally went home at midnight and the ship finally got clearance to leave in the early morning hours. Unfortunately, this delay made it impossible to get to West Point and the ship headed directly for Montevideo. We wish it had been otherwise, but there was no undisclosed plan to get back to Montevideo early.
Restricted access to the Internet: The basic issue here is one of overall capacity onboard the ship, and bandwidth limitations with the outside supplier who manages this capability for the Sea Spirit. This prevented us from opening up access for everyone, as the whole system would have frozen. As we understand it after talking with Natasha, the expedition leader, the shared laptop in the lounge often sat idle and there were no lines to use it. We apologize if this did not seem to the case when you wanted to access the outside world. And to put it in another perspective: after the ship's initially being denied disembarkation in Montevideo as scheduled (due to COVID-19 scare on the part of the Uruguayan authorities), five of our expedition team went online simultaneously to complete requested passenger information forms from Argentina, in the hopes of disembarking in Buenos Aires – Plan B. It took them seven hours to navigate through the online questionnaires, entering information for each and every Sea Spirit guest, and the pages were loading very slowly and were crashing often. So, you can imagine the situation if 10, 20 or even more of the guests were trying to use the Internet simultaneously. As it was, it proved quite a trick to get everyone online with WhatsAp, Messenger, etc. in the final hours, as this pushed the ship's internet capacity to the very limit.
Disembarkation in Montevideo: Working with the Montevideo health authorities, we can tell you it was very tricky once the port ban was put into place, and this prevented us from disembarking on schedule on March 18th. Other ships had already been turned away. However, we found a way, and the Sea Spirit was the first of several other expedition ships that managed to get their passengers ashore, albeit it a day late for us. Longer for the others. The Sea Spirit suddenly learned about its clearance to dock at midnight, and that two buses would be waiting at 8:00 am, with limited instructions or explanations from the authorities. It's not so much that you were abandoned – and we're not happy that you felt that way – but that most of the expedition team were on the first bus that went directly to the airport (as per orders from the health authorities), so only Eloisa and Mark were on the second bus to the hotel with you. They didn't know any more what to expect than you, as staff was told very little beforehand. Once at the hotel, Eloisa and Mark were told not to leave their rooms, so it would have been difficult for them to assist the other guests, which was unfortunate.
Tipping: Yes, there are a few cruise lines that include gratuities in their cruise price, but Poseidon includes itself in the majority – and certainly the majority of expedition ship operators – who believe tipping should be at the discretion of our guests based on their appreciation of the service and hospitality provided. Staff and crew are paid properly and in line with comparable ships in our segment of the business. Showing appreciation for a job well done is a time-honored tradition for passengers of the cruise industry, and we thank you for that!

Our almost 3 week trip to Antarctica…
Our almost 3 week trip to Antarctica aboard the Sea Spirit was beyond our expectations. Every staff member we ran into (crew, expedition, hotel and kitchen) were kind and gracious. The lectures were all informative and thoughtful. The landings were amazing. The food was superb. The accommodations were great. It was an expedition trip and you had to roll with what was possible that day and what wasn't. Not a problem at all for us. We've traveled around the world quite a bit and this was the most memorable trip we've taken.
