After three years of minimal usage
After three years of minimal usage, started having temperature accuracy problems. I chalked it up to ambient temperature fluctuations and wind. Every once and awhile the temperature would do okay. We moved to a location where the grill is more sheltered but when I went to smoke some meat, the readout said it was fluctuating between 230 and 275, way too hot for smoke. I shut the unit off and used the charcoal grill. A few days later I started the Pit Boss up again and again it wouldn't smoke. Contacted customer service and they sent out a new probe. I installed it per instructions and tested it. Set the stove to high, waited until it reached 500 and turned it to smoke. The temperature again hovered between 230 and 275 for ten minutes and I kept watching it to see if it would trend down. Suddenly it began climbing, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 575 and I pulled the plug. I could hear the flame roaring inside and didn't dare open the lid beyond a crack, but I had to open it to let the heat out. The grill is now useless. Contacted customer service again, twice, and no response. You decide for yourself if this is a grill you want to purchase. My experience, it works until it doesn't. When it does you contact customer service and the send you a cheap fix. The cheap fix doesn't work. I have a hazardous grill and contact customer service two times more with no response. One note, the slope up the flame "shield" inside under the grilling area slopes upward toward the probe and the pellet box where the circuit board is. I suspect the head directed to that area damages the board and that would be the real way to fix it. Charcoal is probably my next grill.
