Unfortunately Sue, it appears you may have been misled by your independent research on what determines a Mini from a Standard sizing for our furry Dachshund friends. We are HAPPY to take this moment to educate you further on your misunderstanding. *HISTORY OF THE BREED: Did you know? Mini Dachshunds were once the runts of the litter until they were intentionally produced from a Toy Terrier and Pinscher. *BREEDING MINI'S OR STANDARDS: Did you know? Breeding two Standard Doxies together will NEVER guarantee a Standard puppy, all while, breeding two Minis together MAY produce a little standard-sized puppy. It’s all by genetic chance and well documented online for your reference. *BREED DIFFERENCES: The main difference between miniature and standard dachshunds is size (not weight). Miniatures are noticeably smaller than standards at around 13 and 18 cm (5–6 inches) to their withers, and standards 20–22 cm (8–9 inches) to their withers. This is not a weight standard. For reference-only, Banjo’s parents weigh 10 lbs and 8 lbs respectfully. We have sent the registration paperwork that acknowledges that both parents are indeed the miniature version as well. This does not necessarily guarantee that the puppies will be the same size if they pull from a larger or smaller generation and therefore, we nor any breeder (local or distant) cannot and will not ever guarantee weights due to this. We focus on sending home great, healthy pets that will make their parents proud. It seems like Banjo has fit this bill and while you are concerned with only his weight, this could be a feeding schedule and exercising issue as well.
