We initially signed up for Miacademy…
We initially signed up for Miacademy hoping for a positive online learning experience for our child. However, we encountered several significant issues that ultimately led us to discontinue our use of the platform. One major concern was the apparent lack of robust moderation in the student chat rooms and with user-created content. Kids design items to "sell" in their virtual stores. We were surprised and uncomfortable with some of the interactions and creations our child was exposed to on the main store homepage, which included themes and topics we felt were inappropriate for their age and our family values. It seems the platform doesn't adequately filter or monitor these areas, leaving children potentially exposed to content that parents may find unsuitable. There are also lots of kids in the chat areas that seem to be bots. Though we turned off the chat features for our child, there were still things popping up and there was no way to block this entirely and also use the store feature, which is a primary way of rewarding students in this program. Adding to these concerns were persistent technical problems. On average, about half the time our child attempted to watch educational videos, they would simply fail to load. This significantly disrupted their learning and made the platform incredibly frustrating to use consistently. Finally, I want to caution other parents about Miacademy's contract policy. When we decided the platform was not a good fit due to the aforementioned issues, especially the concerns about moderation and the negative impact of increased screen time on our child's health, we were told that we were outside the 30-day window. This lack of flexibility, even in light of genuine problems with the service and its impact on a child's well-being, is something parents should be aware of before committing to a long-term subscription. While Miacademy may have some appealing aspects, the issues with moderation, unreliable video playback, and a rigid contract policy are significant drawbacks that potential subscribers should carefully consider.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're truly sorry to hear that your experience with Miacademy didn’t meet expectations. We take reliability concerns seriously and are continuously working to troubleshoot any account-specific issues and improve functionality. We’re really sorry to hear your child came across content that didn’t feel appropriate—that’s not the experience we want any family to have. Our moderation team works hard to review all student-created content and keep the platform both engaging and safe, but we understand that what feels okay for some families may not for others. We’re always working to improve that balance. Regarding the chat, Miacademy doesn’t use bots, but many of our younger students are still learning how to communicate online, which can sometimes come across as repetitive or scripted! We always welcome reports so we can take a closer look and address any concerns. We’ve emailed you to follow up more personally, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective!
