Unsuccessful Restoration but Responsive Customer Service
Revised: I have nothing but praise for the customer service of this company. They have reached out several times to explain their process in more detail (including that AI might be used in the process but not as part of the restoration) as well as to explain why the ultimate photo product was unsatisfactory. I believe most of the issue was a combination of a very difficult photo restoration on my part and lack of communication on their part. I would have preferred them to tell me the photo was unrestorable rather than continue to send subpar attempts to fulfill the order; on their side, they were attempting to complete my order. My complete purchase price was promptly refunded once we discussed the matter further. I do believe with simpler photo situations (less damage, fewer individuals in the photo needing restoration, etc.) the results may have been more acceptable. Unfortunately I did not have a good result with MemoryCherish. I shared a heavily faded photo of six individuals, knowing it was going to be a difficult task. However, the website advertising of restoration done "100% by hand" without "automatic programs to speed up" the process led me to believe it could be done. That advertising is completely inaccurate. The photo product I received for review was saved with the file name "ChatGPT Image", making it clear AI was used. However, even that clue wasn't needed, because the photo was a disaster. While all six individuals were sitting lakeside, in casual clothes that can still be seen in the faded photo, the AI image showed three individuals in the clothes they had been wearing in reference photos I included; one individual was in a full suit, while another was in a sweater and a third in a long-sleeved button down shirt. Additionally, the faces looked nothing like the individuals, even after providing reference photos. I was willing to give the company another chance, however, so I provided feedback regarding clothes, hair and facial features. In the new revision I just received, all individuals are now wearing plain white t-shirts. Clothing is fixed, if basic, but what about hair and faces? Solved, according to the company: they cut and pasted the heads from my reference photos and pasted them on the photo. However, they did not accurately size those clips, adjust angles or lighting, or overall check for quality. They look like cartoon images of themselves. I have asked for a full refund of my money, which their site says will be done if the customer is not satisfied. I'm hoping that will be completed as advertised.
