First class system with low monthly fees.
I recently purchased a Link Home Security system through Costco and have been extremely pleased with every aspect of it. After extensive research, I was about to purchase a system through frontpoint which is the best system according to some review sites. Fortunately for me, one of the sites also mentioned Link Home Security and its Costco relationship in passing and after looking into things online it became quite apparent to me that the Link Home Security system is superior to frontpoint’s and all the other consumer-level systems out there. My experience so far has supported my initial impressions.
Link Home Security essentially serves as the “front end” dealer for an alarm.com powered system that uses advanced 2Gig hardware and is centrally monitored through a company called avantguard which, as best I can tell, is strongly affiliated with Link Home Security but now also provides monitoring for other dealers. The hardware is identical to that used by the larger company Vivint, and like Vivint also allows for significant home automation; however Link Home Security charges a much lower monthly fee (nearly 50% less) even if purchased outside of the arrangement they have with Costco. Despite the lower cost, Link Home Security has a better customer service track record as evidenced by the BBB A+ rating, the alarm.com 5-star rating, and multiple online reviews. The UL-listed avantguard monitoring includes redundant central stations in Utah and Idaho so you are always covered even if there are problems at one of the stations.
The staff at Link Home Security talked me through the aspects of the system design and answered several questions for me before I placed my order through Costco.com. It is a bit of a cumbersome process to order through Costco as you end up bouncing between their site and Link Home Security’s and a contract has to be signed via yet another site. However, the Link Home Security representative did offer to stay on the phone with me throughout the process.
The system then arrived completely pre-configured. All that is needed to install the system is to mount the hardware (screws for the panel, motion sensors, glass break sensors and adhesive tape for the door/window sensors) and provide a source of power to the main panel. From the moment the system is plugged in, the panel is in constant connection with the central station via a cellular radio (like how the data plan on your phone is always connected) so there is no waiting for a dial-in before signals are received on the other end. There is nothing I needed to do to configure either the sensors or the cellular radio as it had already been done by Link Home Security. While it is a do-it-yourself installation, this is well within the scope of any homeowners’ skill set particularly with Link Home Security’s excellent support. The main advantage of the do-it-yourself approach is the absence of install fees or having to arrange for an installer to come around. The cost savings associated with the ability to avoid installer fees with each future system upgrade cannot be overstated.
Link Home Security’s support is very accessible via phone, live online chat, or email. While they are not available 24/7, they do take phone calls till 7p Mountain Time which is generally late enough. The one time I had a question at 10p, I just emailed them and went to bed; it was all taken care of the next morning. Of course the avantguard monitoring of the system is taking place 24/7.
If you are a bit more tech savvy then you can really have fun with the system! Unlike many other dealers, Link Home Security gives you the “installer code” with which you can access and change the settings at a “low level.” This allows you to install additional sensors or automation devices without having to go thorough Link Home Security’s support (though they are always happy to talk you through the installation of an additional sensor, and they probably prefer that you do have them do that). The additional hardware can be purchased through Link Home Security or even via third parties such as Amazon. The 2Gig wireless door/window sensors can be used either with the included magnet or with an adaptor that allows monitoring of an externally wired sensor (for example I will be setting up third party gate sensors for my fence). There are also some purely hardwired features you can access such as two hardwired sensor loops, an external output for a piezo siren, and another output that can be customized to indicate different aspects of system status (for example, I am installing some LEDs in different locations that will shine when the system is armed). The system’s response to each sensor can be customized in many ways. You can even include sensors that will be monitored centrally but not affect alarm status (for example, I have a sensor on my basement freezer so that I get a cell phone/email alert if the door is open for more than a minute, but opening the freezer does not set off the alarm). You can download the 2Gig installer manual before buying the system if you want to get a sense of the breadth of customizability. If you are not as tech savvy then I would stay away from using the installer code unless you are on the phone with Link Home Security’s support as there are many different options that need to be considered even for a single sensor type, and changing some of them may put you in violation of local codes.
The alarm.com web and phone app interfaces are nice and allow for remote arming/disarming and for customized alerts to be set up. While you can choose a maximum of 10 sensors for which you can see instantaneous status and continuous history, all of the installed sensors are actually monitored centrally and custom alerts can be generated for any of them.
I haven’t used the automation features much, but will ultimately order some z-wave light switches so that, for example, the back yard lights will illuminate if someone opens the fence after dark. You can buy an inexpensive thermostat to automate with this system. Smart-locks can be controlled too, though are fairly expensive to buy. One thing not to overlook is the relationship alarm.com has with the LiftMaster/Chamberlain MyQ system. This allows you to monitor and control your garage door status through the alarm.com web/phone interfaces. I set up my two garage doors for around $80.
The system’s only down side in my mind is the three-year contract which seems a bit excessive given the limited credit you are given for purchasing the initial equipment. On the other hand, there is a 30 day money back guarantee in case you don’t like the system, and if you do like it you’ll end up keeping it beyond three years anyway.
In summary, the Link Home Security system is one of the most advanced consumer level security systems with one of the lowest maintenance prices (no install fees/low monthly fees). It is simple enough for someone without any technical skills to install and use, but is customizable enough for those who want to tinker! You can’t go wrong with Link Home Security.

Excellent customer service
I had doubts about installing the system myself, thinking that only a professional can do it. But it was easy and when I did have trouble I only had to place a call and they were able to help me thru it.

pretty much the same as vivint at half the price!
customer service was great, installation was super easy, and everything went as expected. I can't believe the price is half that of vivint, for the same exact system!
