The charge a price and tack on a bunch of extra fees as the process continues on in order to deliver your boxes and these are not small charges. After paying nearly $200 a box for 48 boxes IVL stole one of my boxes and destroyed 17 other boxes that were covered in mold and wet upon arrival or squashed with the contents inside damaged or destroyed. I have pictures of this and sent all of these to IVL. They said insurance does not cover this and they will do nothing to help me. The below is the copy and pasted answer I received:
We are so sorry to hear that loss and/or damage has occurred to your shipment. Although at times things happen that are out of our control and are rare occurrences, we are always saddened when we hear it has happened to one of our customer’s shipments. You did not purchase insurance on this shipment so there is no coverage, however, even if you had, your claim would be denied since you were only entitled to total loss coverage since we cannot verify the actual contents of the shipment being that you were a self-pack client.

Terrible experience
IVL provided a terrible moving experience lacking in service, professionalism and basic competence.
• They broke a floor lamp by bending the top at an angle
• They broke my 65” TV – could have happened at any point during the move, given the lacking competency, but when the mover delivering my belongings at my new house was unloading, he leaned the 65” TV on its short end against a pole at an angle, which caused visible bowing, so if the TV wasn’t already broken from earlier in the move, this would do it
• They didn’t even start shipping my belongings from California to New Orleans until a full two weeks after they picked everything up. For those two weeks it just sat in a warehouse in California going nowhere.
• During the process, it took numerous emails, phone calls and voice mails to get any sort of response (days would go by with no answer to my requests for status updates). Once my belongings were finally en route they notified me and had the gall to give me attitude when I asked for a location update after my belongings had finally been on the road for a few days
• The packers in California did a subpar job, I’ve used packers for four moves so far, and these folks’ work was abysmal. They also left a full closet worth of items untouched. I should have checked every closet before they left, but honestly at that point I hadn’t realized how deeply incompetent the IVL folks were from top to bottom and it just didn’t cross my mind that professional packers could overlook an entire closet
• The delivery folks showed no concern for any of the items I was paying close to $10K for safe delivery. The TV, as noted above, of course, but also many boxes marked “fragile” or “this side up” that they would just haphazardly drop with no attention to what they were doing
• I was quoted a price around $5K when I first went through the items list with the sales person. When I finalized the list, I asked one of the reps if I needed to include thinks like “mixing bowls” and “kitchenaid mixer” – the first sales person I spoke with did not indicate I needed to include the usual household bricabrac like that. I added a bunch of these smaller items that one would assume are present in a number of kitchens, etc. The new price quoted was over $8K and by that point in the process it was too late to engage another company
• When I spoke with the sales person originally, she said the delivery window is 1-3 weeks and when I was surprised by the 3 weeks, she heavily emphasized that 1 week was much more likely (I acknowledge she didn’t guarantee, but she forecast extreme confidence that it would be closer to 1 week). In the end, they didn’t even deliver my items within 3 weeks of the pick up.
Very nearly every part of this transaction was incredibly difficult and costly. The IVL actions (or lack of action in some cases) have been so deficient in basic competency and ability it has almost felt malicious because I find it hard to believe so many people can be so bad at their jobs at so many levels. Strongly recommend literally any other moving company.

Response from International Van LinesJul 9, 2024
Leroy,
We apologize for any inconvenience and will ensure we don't contact you further. We are not a call center, so I am unsure of how this happened, but I will look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

“Churn and Burn”
They're shady at best. They will take your money and run. Luckily, I did not get scammed. I've read the trust pilot reviews after receiving a quote. They have a 'churn and burn' philosophy. Thank you past Trustpilot reviewers. You did a good service for honest people. IVL, I hope you get your act together. Otherwise, your business is the only one that will be Churning and Burning.

Save yourself the stress and go elsewhere!
I would give it zero if I could. After the initial winning of your business and taking your money, and then more money, this company is terrible. From the packing, to shipping, to release of the container it was all stress. Packers were late, did an awful job, and tried to cram all the work in one day so were there until almost midnight. Things arrived broken/trodden on and clothes were just stuffed into boxes rather than hung in special wardrobe containers. Fittings are missing. The size of the job was totally underestimated- I was promised the container would fit the car as well as the HHG - it didn't. They promised they would work with me for an alternative- they didn't. They specified 6-9 weeks shipping - it wasn't (the goods were at the yard for a month, packed in March, shipped in April and arrived in July. Total 16 weeks!
On arrival at Southampton (from Washington state, via China and Holland) we were informed there was a problem and our HHG could not be released. No information was forthcoming - many phone calls/emails, all ignored. Apparently IVL had not paid a bill due to the shipper and our goods were held hostage - this was at our expense as we had to pay £244 storage due to their errors taking us over the 5 days demurrage allowed.
From start to finish this was major stress and $000s more than initially quoted.
Do not use these people - go to Mayflower - I wish I had.

Stay away from this company
I'd like to thank International Van Lines for absolutely the worst moving experience in my life. I moved from EU to California and from California to Texas before and I experienced some good relocation service.
With International Van Lines I experienced delays, total lack of communication, incompetence, and absolutely not giving a **** about my stuff. It's been packed without any organization (like, garage stuff found in boxes marked as kitchen), no numbering, things like fragile pictures or my PC were just wrapped in a plastic wrap (!) and threw with the rest into the shipping container. Motorcycles, that were supposed to be strapped and secured, were lying down on the floor of the container. One motorcycle came with broken gear shifter. Many other things scratched, broken, or missing parts, we couldn't assemble our bed because frame was broken, the mattress torn and dirty and the screws all over the container.
The local relocation company contractors that unloaded the container in Poland told me they have never seen such mess in 10 years of their careers.

International Van Lines is grossly unethical and nobody should use them
International Van Lines is the worst company I have ever done business with in my entire life, to the point where their disastrous handling of my move was genuinely traumatic for me, and I haven’t been able to write this review until now, six months later. It’s still hard.
Short version: They lied about the timeline, refused to tell me when my stuff was arriving once they had our money, delivered it a month late, lost and destroyed a substantial amount of belongings, and then created an intentionally impossible to complete claims process so that we couldn’t even make a claim on the damage.
Long version: International Van Lines was hired to move my belongings from California to Massachusetts, with a delivery date of November 15th. We arranged to have the stuff picked up on October 30th, and the sales representative assured us that it rarely took more than a week to arrive.
The first sign of trouble was when the contracted movers showed up and had a bunch of terms that were not in the original moving contract with IVL, including that they weren’t liable for damage to various types of furniture; this despite the fact that the moving company is owned by IVL. We were forced to either accept the new terms or lose half of the substantial ($6000+) cost of the move.
Once they had the stuff, IVL suddenly changed their tune, refusing to confirm they would deliver on the 15th as agreed, and insisting that was an “estimate” and they had up to 30 days to deliver after that. The contract specified that they would “make every possible effort” to deliver on the 15th, but they did not even pretend to try. My stuff did not depart California until November 26th, 11 days after it was supposed to arrive; International Van Lines still refused to provide an estimate for delivery when the truck left. I had moved on the 14th and was forced to reside in an empty apartment for weeks, even as I started a new job. When I asked them what had happened, they said “Nothing has failed” and it was all going according to plan, in direct breach of the contract.
My stuff ultimately did not arrive until Friday, December 9th, and we were given only 48 hours notice (with the driver calling us from Virginia and asking where our stuff was going, apparently not even being told the delivery destination!) The stuff that arrived was a disaster; frames that they had specifically promised to wrap were unprotected and damaged, backs of shelving ripped, a handmade table with a shattered base and internal damage that ultimately cost $300 to fix (and would have been another $200+ for all the scratches), a broken TV stand, etc. The stickers they used to keep track of which boxes were which had fallen off, so they had no system to determine what actually arrived; multiple boxes were missing, and the items were never recovered.
The movers then damaged both the couch and the bedframe assembling them, and did not inform me; I would only discover later when the bed started collapsing with me in it, and I found twisted metal because they hadn’t bothered to install any of the support screws and struts. Meanwhile, the futon was not only misassembled such that it was unusable as a futon, but they stripped the bolts; we can’t fix it, and we’ll have to destroy it in order to get it out of the apartment.
Finally, they outsourced the claims process to a company that built an intentionally impossible process: websites that only showed one part of the process at a time, and wouldn’t save your work, requiring hours and hours of form-filling and forcing you to restart, combined with asking increasingly absurd questions (like the purchase date for every item); the alternate was mailing in a package, which other reviews all attested they would pretend to not receive so they wouldn’t have to pay out a claim. We were not able to make any claims on the damaged and missing items, despite me spending a good 6 hours on the claims process before realizing it was futile.
I have never felt so victimized. I deeply regret doing business with International Van Lines, and to this day - six months later - am finding new damage and missing items from the move.

I have NO intention of using IVL again…
I have NO intention of using IVL again in the future.
Here is my unfortunate experience with IVL: My belongings were picked up in Missouri on 05/12 by a broker associated with IVL. The driver told me that my items would be stored in a warehouse in Missouri.
Initially, I had scheduled the first available delivery date for Connecticut as 06/03. IVL's customer service representative assured me over the phone that they were known for their punctuality and rarely cause any delays.
However, as the week of 06/12 approached (ONE MONTH AFTER PICKUP DATE), I still hadn't received any updates. Concerned, I decided to call and inquire about the status of my items. Tried many time to contact IVL and eventually heard an response. Shockingly, I was informed that my belongings were still sitting in the Missouri warehouse, untouched and without even being loaded onto a trailer.
To this day (40 DAYS AFTER PICKUP), I have no idea where my items are without any communication from IVL regarding the status of my order. Despite my numerous attempts to reach out via emails, calls, and voicemail messages, they have remained unresponsive. This lack of communication and accountability has left me extremely dissatisfied with their services. In my personal experience, after signing the contract with IVL, I found that it took numerous attempts, typically around 10 calls or emails, to receive a single response from them.
This delay has caused significant inconvenience as I am currently sleeping on the floor with limited clothing change and without access to essential items such as my books and other belongings necessary for my trip and for my work.
I was officially responded by IVL that "Routes are created based on how many moves we have in a specific area, first available delivery request, and the size of the move." Does this mean that if there are fewer orders being moved from the Midwest to the East Coast, my delivery will be indefinitely delayed until a sufficient number of orders are accumulated for this route?!
I have serious reservations about the authenticity of numerous positive reviews for IVL, as I suspect many of them may have been created by trolls. I would strongly advise exercising caution when considering or relying upon these reviews.
