An actual waste of my time — stay far, far away
This is going to be a long one, but after reading many of the experiences with 1-800-Hansons (and now having my own, personal experience with them), I had to share. James Hoffer was the sales person who came to give me my quote, but turns out he was just there to give me the 1-800-Hansons sales pitch. The measurement was weird, as he started with all windows facing the left because that’s how he liked to do it. He almost missed an entire set of windows in the master bedroom this way, and I had to remind him that he had not measured those. He started his pitch by asking what I was looking for in a company, which makes no sense when I just wanted him to give me a quote for windows. It was very much like an interview, him asking me what kind of values in a company I thought were ideal and valuable. Asking me what I’m looking for in windows on a 1 to 10 scale, which he used again at the end of the pitch (as if to say that since I’ve given all of these things a 9 or 10 and Hansons qualifies for all of them that I will be going with Hansons). He then started telling me about how great Hansons was, how great the CEO is, and that the CEO was on the front cover of a magazine in 2011 and that he can only be on the cover of it once even though he wants to be on it again. Like it matters to windows in any way. The literature he brought with him was in an old, nasty looking binder, and all the paperwork he showed me was dated, at the highest, 2017. Nothing he showed me had current information about the company and their work in 2019. He used manipulative scare tactics, showing me his permit and then saying “I’m very sure that all the people that you’ve talked to already have showed you theirs”. Hansons only offers windows with triple-pane glass, which can only be found on their website stated in ONE location (on the window replacement page). Not on the home page, not even on the Window FAQ page! Only on the window replacement page, a brief mention once and hidden within a paragraph of text. James Hoffer’s explanation for triple-pane windows being the best was “because 3 is better than 2”, validating this with a newspaper clipping that he claimed was from the Detroit Free Press (with no logo or date to it, so who’s to really know if that was true). 3 being better than 2 is NOT a good reason to go with triple-pane windows, and simply telling me that 3 is better than 2 is not very convincing. I’ve had Home Depot, a local window company, and Wallside Windows come out prior to this appointment, and I learned about the windows from all of them more than I did about the 1-800-Hansons windows — other than that 3 is better than 2. It took over an hour just to get a quoted price from him. After giving me the quote and telling me that I’d be best off getting the Smart Choice windows (3rd in a tier of 4, so the 3rd highest priced which I hadn’t even said that I wanted since I’m trying to be budget conscious), he started to pack up his things while telling me that I can go get out my drivers license and we can get started. Inquiring why I needed my drivers license for simply a quote, he said that I needed my drivers license to get started on financing. James Hoffer was looking to close the deal right then and there — for $11,000+ windows that I wasn’t convinced I needed to get. Out of everyone who has come out to give me a quote so far, no one other than Hansons has requested my drivers license. Just another red flag. I politely tried to get him to leave by stating that I was just looking for a quote, and that I had more to think about with other competitors. After asking me how long I needed to think about it (which I couldn’t give an answer to because at that point I didn’t want to use Hansons), he “called” a manager or supervisor asking if there was “anything else they could do for me” as I was going to sign in “about a week” and he wanted to make sure the 60% off would still be available at that time — surprise! It wasn’t going to be. Was there absolutely anything else they could do for me? I found this to be an old generation, manipulative scare tactic to get me into signing a contract with Hansons right then and there. My parter (who hadn’t been available until the last 10 minutes of this spiel) actually told him to pack up and leave, which James Hoffer directly ignored. Again, trying to get him to leave, I said that needed time to consider other competitors, and he actually raised his voice asking if we had better offers from competitors who offered triple pane windows. I said no, and he again asked what the problem was. Even after I said that I appreciated him coming out, he rudely asked if there was anything wrong and I said yes you’re not respecting our request that you leave our home. They eventually complied because I was the one who asked them to leave. The entire appointment took an hour and 15 minutes, the first 5 being window measurements. I can’t believe what an entire waste of time it was. A man from Wallside Windows had actually been to my home a few hours earlier to give a quote, and when I told him that I also had an appointment with Hansons he told me to look up reviews because very few people have anything good to say about 1-800-Hansons. He said appointments can take up to 3 to 4 hours, and they’re looking to scare and manipulate you into signing a contract right in the moment. I figured that Hansons is a competitor to Wallside, so he has to talk bad about Hansons, but he actually didn’t talk bad about them until I brought up my appointment. I looked up reviews and found this site, but figured I’d keep my appointment because how bad could it really be. It’s as bad as everyone says it is. The only positive thing I can say about it is that he removed his shoes before walking through my home. But I imagine that’s also part of the 1-800-Hansons scheme. Don’t waste your time scheduling an appointment with 1-800-Hansons. You’ll regret it like most of everyone else here.
